visual emissions test

Hi all. This question goes out to all of you living in a state that for older vehicles, the emissions inspection is just visual. Where you take your bronco for visual emissions, does the mechanic ever take the air cleaner off to check the carburetor?
The reason I'm asking is because my 85 bronco has a feedback carburetor on it and I would like to put a non feedback carb on it. But if they take the air cleaner off, they will see that it does not have the original emissions friendly carb on and they will fail it. I would leave the computer harness in place but it will not be connected to the carb. Wih the air cleaner on, you will not be able to see the carburetor.
Changing carbs will be alot easier than having a threaded boss welded to the exhaust for an o2 sensor. There is no exhaust port for an o2 sensor and with the feedback carb and no o2, my bronco is running rich. I do know that for the visual inspection, they do not look for an o2 sensor.
Maybe I'm making too much of this and maybe I should just remove the exhaust down pipe and have the boss welded on for an o2 sensor.
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Bill

Where are you located?
Where I'm at, for inspections they look at my windsheild(make sure it's not cracked), and check my tail lights and head lights. This is at my local ford dealership too.

IF they would give me any trouble, I would go to my local exhaust shop that also dose inspections, and I've seen him give old trashy vehicals, that probablly most light don't work, and none of the emission equipment works, inspections.

Hey there I'm in western Pa. It depends on your inspection station. Thats where they do visual. Most if the isn't stock ie. suppost to have o2 sensor. ect. My inspection station looks for exhaust mods, (P.S My Ispect guy says they are going to crack down on exhaust Mods) If it looks stock good ect . But not to picky. But if you are getting the "window sticker" Now thats the state emisions is snif/ computer test is something else. I don't know about your year bronco ( because of age you might not have to),but I bought a 94 F150 near Harrisburg . It needed state inpection. They would not let me take it with out emmisions test. Well truck has all stock stuff in working order,But someone had swaped 93 motor in and firing order was different. What a stink!!!!! I convinsed them that where I lived we don't even have stickers yet. And they let me go. Good luck I didn't help you much.

Just throw the dude a $50 and be done with it.

Me personally.....I would just weld a O2 bung into the down pipe......it can be done without removing the pipe......its very easy to do, and if you dont have what you need to do the job....just take it to the nearest exhaust shop and have them do it.....????
