Hello all, some of you may know that I purchased a Magnaflow 16614 SIDO for my Screw in July of this year. Up to now everything has been great. The other day I was peering under my truck and it appears to me that the pipes are totally rusted from the muffler back (including the muffler). I live in the Northeast (Northern CT) and the salt trucks are in full force at the time but the pipes are supposed to be stainless steel. What gives? Here are some pics. Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.
They rust because they are made of 409 stainless...304 Stainless will always stay bright and shiny. "The difference between t304 and t409 stainless steel lies in their chromium content. T304 has more chromium component than t409 at 18 to 20 percent. It also has a nickel content of 8 to 10 percent. The t409 only has chromium content of 10.50 to 11.75 percent. Its nickel content is only 0.50 percent. The t304 has so much chromium and nickel content and very little ferrous material that magnets will not stick to it"....excerpted from a good article listed by Ken in the longtube header article...Hope this helps... Andrew
