While rewiring the headlights I found a wire that was not connected, looks like 10 gauge, has a fusible link with a 5/16 ring terminal in the area of the passenger side battery. It runs across in front of the radiator and goes into the cab under the brake booster through a single conductor connector.
Any ideas what this is for?

No relays on the headlights, that's why I'm rewiring them, I have high mount aux headlights for the plow, and the wiring kit that was installed with the plow added about 20' of 16 gauge wire to the headlight circuit resulting in very low output from the lights.
The wire in question looks like it is a factory installed wire.
Did the truck come from the factory with any sort of camper wiring?
I don't know if it was wired from the factory for a camper. It spent it's life as a service rig for Fed X and is wired so it can be used to test the wiring on the trailers. I haven't checked the wiring on that plug yet, I'll see if the mistry wire is associated with that plug.
Change any light wires to 12 gauge, or bigger and be sure to use a relay.
I blew the bulbs out on halogen lights, when the rpm's dropped and the voltage dropped with it. The relay takes the power directly from the battery.

Yep, I've been using 10 Gauge and relays for years.
My 84-86 diagrams show a red wire coming directly from the bat + post on the starter relay, going into the cab, changing over to a yellow wire somewhere in or near the cab, and supplying power to the trailer brake controller. This truck must have come from the factory with the trailer tow wiring and the connector for it under the dash.

Thanks Franklin2, It doesn't have a brake controller now, probably why it's not hooked up. I just shoved it out of the way for now.
Is there a online source of the FSM for these trucks?
The diagrams show the factory did not provide the brake controller, just the wires under the dash to hook it up. So the owner or the dealer would have to buy the controller aftermarket and then hook it up to the wires Ford provided.
Do your side indicator lights work? I have a similar situation and that's what it looks like it is in my manual. Itgoes to the forward facing side of the starter relay.
