If I've ruined the pump by pusing the TC into it, wouldn't I have lost pressure? If I lost pressure, I'm thinking I would've lost reverse, 1st and 2nd. Those all work still.
Your are right, if the pump was destroyed you would have lost line pressure and all the gears would be effected. Just losing 3rd and 4th is the little drum in the back of the case, it is a weak spot and known to fail.
when you drop the trans, leave the xfer case in place. when reinstalling, do it without the case, then install the case. its hard to balance with the case on. i paid $60 for the junk trans i used. only problem i found in it was the od band was just about down to bare metal.
when i swapped flexplate weights, i used my cutoff wheel and removed the weights and mig welded them back on the other plate.

Ok, so to reiterate, when I drop the trans, leave the xfer case on it coming out, but install it after the trans is back in. Got it.
That's what I was planning to do with the weights, cut them off and mig weld the 28 oz back on the AOD plate, so I don't have to go buy another one.
I'll let you know how it looks when I get it out and open. Probably gonna have it completely rebuilt while it's out anyway. Hopefully reduce the times I have to go back into it.
Thinking back to when I put the motor in, I don't remember any particular binding when mating the motor and tranny. I was able to turn the motor enough to tighten the nuts onto the torque converter.
Yeah that's what I remember too, it goes together fine and you only find out something is wrong when you drive it. Good luck with the rebuild.
