I have a 1993 f150 I bought in November. Has a 302 put Hedman long tube headers on running dual exhaust in front of tires new oil pan and gasket no leaks. Was leaking tranny fluid from the dipstick bottom replaced that stopped leaks. Has 130,000 on it. I'm parking it in May to do the body work (my speciality I start school next year for collision repair 17 years old). Needs rust repair found the panels and a new bed with minimal work just under 300 and a shop to paint under 600.00 two tone red white. Lots of other plans I'll post later.
Now here's the issue:
Wouldn't shift into drive. Figured the torque converter. Pulled the pan and it was just black with metal shavings assuming something burnt up (to say the least). Found a guy to rebuild it for me since I know very little about rebuilding trannys. This is an automatic no overdrive button 2wd 302 motor. Is this an e4od or aod? Everyone says aod but I want to be safe. I'm saving 300.00 by pulling It myself and taking it to him to rebuild all brand new parts shift kit bushings gears clutches torque converter etc.
Or is there someway to tell if you can't tell from here.
Also I am planning on picking up another small block 351 or 302 can a rebuilt tranny hold a 351 I know the bell housing will bolt up I'm just curious as to a rebuilt 302 tranny would handle a 351c.

Haha thanks for your help. That's what the transmission guy said just wanted a second opinion because it would of been about 400 more for an e4od and at that price I would of bought a monster in a box and learned the hard way on building a transmission
Who knows. It blew my mind going out at 130,000 but my plans are to rebuild it completely anyway. Would you or anyone know if a rebuilt aod could handle a small block 351 or should I just stick with the 302 (I know the bell housing bolt up but as far as performance I'm in a grey area)
the aod/aode is car trans.it'll work in a truck just used as a dd/light duty work,but if you want to swap in a 351 you should seriously consider the e40d if you want it to hold up.
the reason why they used the light duty trans in many of the 300/302 f150 trucks,was because not everyone needed a hd trans.so it was cheaper to buy one with a car trans.why not if your not going to use it?
there would be more threads with issues of the ld trans if ford made the mistake of putting them in work duty setups like the e40d got used for.the E40D/4R100 is the C6 based trans.pre '95 they just didn't build them strong enough to hold up to work duty and last.they started out on the wrong foot.

The E4OD might be a wiring mess but it's quite a bit more beefy than the AOD.
Yeah that's a good idea. Go ahead and teach him how to burn up his freshly built trans. You have to put a lot of money into an AOD for it to RELIABLY hold up to someone doing the shuffle on it.
AOD should have 14 pan bolts, E4OD has 20 BTW.
AOD is a decent trans. AODE is an even better trans, and the 4R70W (wide ratio AODE) and it's later versions are great transmissions. The 4R70W got wide use behind the modular motors and in my experience are very reliable transmissions. Much much more reliable and stronger than their predecessor that's for sure.
I'd put a 4R70W in it. There's a company that makes stand alone transmission controllers, I think it's called Baumann or something along those lines. I'm gonna do this to my '84 when I finally save up the money.
