I installed one and changed it after about 4000 miles and pulled two table spoons of sand out of the filter. It is also one of the causes for oil cooler failures.
I did however, lost about a half gallon of antifreeze leaking out of the heater hose when i split it so you might be prepared to have some antifreeze available to replace in the bottle when you're through.
Did you squeeze the heater hose several times before you cut it? I squeezed the heater hose (several times) before I cut it and maybe lost two drops of coolant. You can feel and hear the coolant getting pushed out of the hose when you do this.

The same here, I lost only a few drops of coolant when I cut the hose.
Well..........bust my britches, I did just as you said, squeezed it several times but it was slowly leaking, even so much that I didn't realize it for awhile until I saw it was running out from under the truck. Hummm, don't know why but it didn't work for me, thanks for the try anyway.
