Thank you so much for your detailed response to this issue. According to the local dealer all this is fairly routine for these trucks and that is why they always have plenty of parts on hand to sell to the hapless like me.

This sort of stuff is right up my alley.
Glad to help.
When my pilot bearing went out it took the transmission with it.
I could hear the destinctive rumble of a bad mainshaft bearing coming out of the rear half of the transmission when sitting, idling in neutral.
$3000.00 in PARTS ALONE later, I was back on the road.
Is this because we use our trucks to drag a heavy fifth wheel? Of course the automatic struggles with that function as well. A friend of mine who hauls equipment around with his 7.3 has gone thru five automatic transmissions. I am wondering if this will be an ongoing issue every 130K or so.
just did mine 2 weeks ago. 600 for the luk solid flywheel kit wich has everything and about 5 houls labor time that wout a garage working in the snow outside. 2k is crazy. it is a pretty ez job tho

I don't think this should be an ongoing issue. Just pay attention and fix any issues as soon as you notice them. The only thing I've had to do with mine was replace the clutch at 212k. What I learned from that is that cheap looking shifter boot keeps A LOT of noise out of the cab if you don't tighten it back down all the way.
South Bend Clutch has a different clutch fork, that is stronger and machined differently to work with their Dual Disc clutches. I know its probably too late now, but to the original poster, www.dieselsite.com also makes a repair kit for worn/scored input shafts on the ZF6 which comes with a sleeve, bearing and installer tool.
Thanks again, Dan/Kwik for great advice on my truck. The shop owner was able to find a used (new condition) shaft and has ordered in the Kevlar bushing saving money for me and increased performance. I feel that the longevity of the repaired system now should exceed the OEM.
