Can somebody tell me if it helps to drill some holes in a stock air box,i am running a k& n filter. About 1" to 2" holes is what i was think of drilling in it with a hole saw Or does it really make a difference.
We're not trying to be negative about you sheephead, but the reason you'll read so many negative comments about the K&N here is they have been known to let dirt past the filter in the stock air box (which isn't that great to begin with). They may work great in a gas engine, but in front of the 7.3's turbo, not so well.
To find out how yours is doing, take the top off the filter box and inspect the top of the box and the tube that goes back to the turbo. Run your finger across several places. You should not have enough dust in there to leave a clean mark where you wipe your finger. If you can find any dust, that means your engine is injecting dirt. Several people here have had to replace their motor due to a "dusted" engine.
If you want more airflow without spending lots of $$$ on a fancy intake, then the 6637 is what you want. It looks like this
When you first open the box, your first thought will be "that thing won't fit under my hood."
The stock air box is known to allow dust by any filter and the K&N is not well thought of here. I definitely wouldn't drill any holes and increase the chances of warping and leaking and ruining you turbo and possibly your engine.
Smart move, very smart! Take the filter box off, and the screw clips off the sides, about a 3" piece of 4" OD pipe and 1 other clamp and your done! Also get one of Pete's covers too. They look great, and help the filter last longer!!!!!! And Welcome to FTE...........
I hate to sound stupid but what all will i need to put this filter on? Greedy 737 said a 3" piece of 4" pipe. What kind of pipe and will it slide into the 6637 filter?
thanks
Protecting the turbo is just a small piece of the puzzle with wanting to keep the air intake as clean as possible. Allowing small pieces of debris to be sucked into the engine will cause low compression and quickly lead to an engine rebuild. We have all read too many horror stories about dusted engines and the K&N drop-in filters. The problem is that the 7.3 simply pulls too much of a volume of air for the K&N drop-in to handle and dirt just gets pulled right through it into your engine.
The 6637 is a relatively inexpensive solution to the poor design of the stock air box that is also know to get leaky over time. Here on FTE it was orignally know as the Kwikk Mod since Kwikkordead introduced it in a thread although he readily admits it was not of his design. Also known as the DIY Tymar filter, it does a superior job of filtration and allowing the 7.3 to breath without any intake restrictions. Although this photo of my initial install years ago shows the filterminder installed in the end of the 6637, it is not necessary. The addition of one of Pete's covers will keep the leaves in the fall out of the filter along with the summer bugs. Water and snow has not been a problem for any of us that have ran the 6637 filter.
Well I probably need a few new leads but thats besides the point :-p I don't have a shiny engine bay like most people. Though Bobs does look awfully purdy.

And you can too in 3 easy steps....
1. Wash engine bay and spray engine shiney stuff all over
2. Park truck in hermetically sealed environment 3. Never drive truck
This pic was taken a few years back during the summer. I had just cleaned the engine and installed the 6637. Got her all gussied up for the photo-shoot. It's not real bad now as I like to work on a clean engine but it doesn't look like that pic for sure.
