Overhead Temp Wrong

The outside temperature on the overhead console is wrong. For example, it was 10 degrees this weekend and it was showing me in the 30's.

I did a search and found some old threads related to this but I get redirected to an error when trying to open them.

Anyone have any ideas? This problem is new within the last week or two.

does the temp move at all? or always 20 degrees off?
the other day mine started off at 20, the temp the night before and took 15 minutes to get up to 45 - the temp that morning. see if anything is hitting, blocking etc the end of the temp probe.

Where would I find the probe? I will have to monitor it more to see if it is always off a certain amount of it it fluctuates.

Mine has been displaying -40*F for several years,
ever since the console was replaced due to a short that melted it.

I have posted about it here before without much luck.

Maybe this time?

not sure where the end of the probe is on these trucks. on our other cars I've always found it tucked up near the grill/bumber area.

Mine is doing the same thing this year. Last year was perfectly in tune to whatever the local radio station said it was. Now it is accurate above 35 but below that it reads too high. For example, yesterday it was 0 outside and the temp read 26. the day before, the temp was 6 and it read 30.

I did replace the bumper, grille, header this year but I was careful to reattach all rubber Shields. I'm not sure either where the temp sensor is, but my best guess is it is the probe just behind the grille on the driver's side.

I'd love to find a fix for this, but I hate to just blindly order a new sensor if that isn't the problem.

mohrds - that new front end looks great. how much work was it? all new parts or junkyard finds?

not sure how much the new probe would be - might be cheaper option to get a new mirror with the temp and compass in it.

The probe is behind the grill on the driver side. The bracket on mine broke and the sensor fell down against the radiator making it read hotter than it really was.

here is the thread, Monsta has a pic posted of what the sensor looks like

I have at least one working OAT sensor, because the temp displayed
on the climate control console is correct.

The display on the overhead console reads -40* all the time.

I have decided a wire fell off, and haven't tried to pry anything open
up there to check...

I feel cheated. What are you guys talking about?

My exterior temperature is displayed in the HVAC controls in the dashboard.

Those with manual controls have the ambient air temp displayed on the overhead console with the compass.

I have both automatic and manual controls on the dash, plus temp/fan settings on the wheel.

My readout on the HVAC console on the dash is spot-on.

My other read-out on the overhead console reads -40*F at all times, but doesn't seem to effect
my automatic climate control, which works great.

Most likely because it works off the cabin
sensor, and the OAT sensor that functions (and that they share?). The console being wrong is most likely a wire not attached or shorted, because I imagine that -40* is simply the "out of range" reading.

But I don't know.
