Jumpy steering when turning in 4-HI

I have a 2000 Excursion Limited PSD, 4x4. We got some snow and ice here in the NW and I just took the Ex out to see the town.

The truck was in 4-hi, when I would turn...my steering would jump and pull. This happened when I turned left or right. When I would go in a staight line...no problem.

Any thoughts? And THANKS A MILLION for any and all help!!!

Adrian

Some pull in the wheel is normal when turning in 4wd. This is due to the front and rear axles being locked together via the transfer case. When you turn the front axle follows a different track than the rear axle causing binding in the system.

This is why it's paramount to only use 4wd on a surface slippery enough to allow this binding to be relieved by wheelspin. Snow, sand, and ice allow this wheel spin to occur. wet or dry pavement will not which can cause breakage in your drive line. Even on a slippery surface you will feel feedback in the steering wheel.

BTW welcome to FTE.

its normal for a 4WD to have some torque bind when steering.. esp. noticable when the tires cant easily slip to offset the diference in turning circles from the left side to the rights side wheels...

if u can find some loose gravel or mud to play in, you'll find the truck has this effect alot les when it can easily spin the wheels..

hope that helps..

Thanks guys. There really was no need to have the truck in 4-hi.

I bought the truck over this last summer and was offered a chance to put it in 4 wheel...sure I thought I was cool...but not so much now!!!

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Thanks Fordfanatic. I bought it with 80,5xx miles on it. Bought it last summer when they were all but giving away big trucks because of gas prices.

I was happy when I found it for $11,900, especially with the low miles. Like I said, all but giving away.

I have been running biodiesel ever since. As noted, I live in the NW...just what anyone would expect of us hippies up here!!!

The 7.3l runs quieter and smooter on bio and I have eliminated my carbon footprint. Take that with the price on got on the truck and it has been a win/win situation.

Thanks again!!!

I just lay into the go-pedal and make one of the front wheels slip - binding issue cured

Hasn't happened yet - if anything, it's going to be the stock ESOF hubs that are no longer on my truck
