Hi Guys. I have a 56 F100 with a Volare suspension and am unhappy with the power steering on it.
The steering wheel turns too easy and this causes it to wander. When the power steering fluid gets hot it is difficult to turn the wheels when stopped.
The steering box is original Volare and the pump is a Chevy. I am wondering if the pump is a mismatch and this is causing the problem. Any ideas?
I had a used chevy steering box and pump that used to boil the fluid out after about 30 miles.
after replacing the pump every week, we decided to change the steering box, and there was some restriction.. poof the problem went away..
I have just replaced the steering gear on my volare front end.. but won't know how it feels (prior felt loose) until I get the body back from the body shop next month.
Mine works perfectly except it leaks a little. You can use the Chrysler PS pump easily enough. That's what I did. It's made by Saginaw, the same company that makes the ones for GM and others. A little fabrication here and there on the GM brackets and you can have a Chrysler PS pump to match the steering box. Even with the matching PS pump the steering is very easy though and takes some getting used to. There is a lot of oversteer with this suspension.
I too have been playing around with Box/pump combo issue. I could not mount the chrysler pump housing because of return line clearance even though all the brackets fit. I finally decided to put the pump into the GM pump housing which has the return at the bottom as opposed to the center rear. It worked just perfect without any alterations. . But, now I believe that the 2 pumps are the same except that the GM is not metric. If so, it was a waste of time. Both pump have the very same check valve and pressure spring. As far as the pressure hose, you could use the chrysler hose in the GM pump by using the Chrysler pump fitting which screws right in to the GM pump. 'Viola" ( I suppose) Pics in Gallery
I took this from an earlier post and have since helped a few guys do this to use Chrysler pumps on Ch**y blocks and GM pumps on Chrysler blocks with a GM clip. The guts are the same except the gm has a keyway shaft and the other is a press-on.Just use the housing that fits your brackets.
