Hi all - I have a 96 F250 4x4 and just noticed the steering problem last night. When making a turn in either direction, the wheels don't straighten out and in fact it seems to want to keep turning on occasion. Does it sound like the power steering pump or something else? I had the ujoints replaced a few years ago, but have only put on about 2000 miles since then, if even that. Any ideas?
I don't think the power steering would have anything to do with it as the power steering just assists you in steering easier, not necessarily controlling the direction. I would put some grease on it first, do ball joints and u joints all around, then if that isn't the problem you could check the tie rods, although i'm not sure if they could cause this issue but it would seem to be the next logical step after greasing and checking ball joints
If you don't have any binding/resistance when steering lock-to-lock, and the pump doesn't labor doing that, I would check the steering knuckles, pitman/idler arms and linkage. Yeah, grease any fittings you have and check for anything that could bind the linkage. (Have someone check the steering box/linkage operation while you steer lock-to-lock.) Good luck, and keep us informed.
I haven't looked under the hood of my truck to compare, but I had the exact same problem with my Astro van, and the problem turned out to be a seized u-joint in the intermediate steering shaft. The only way I was able to check it though was to remove the shaft and try moving the joint.
