I wanted to know if any body had a steering problem I've been having with my truck . It feels like the power steering is not working at 100% . There is a certain stiffness when turning left or right and it is like the ball joints are stiff, but there are 8 months old and I grease them once a month . It's intermidit , like turning the wheel and it would feel easy then stiff then easy then stiff until you got the steering wheel fully turn to either side . Any ideas? Maybe steering box?
You might have a bad seal or piston problem in the steering box. They are not too hard to disassemble. Just really heavy. Do you have 4wheel drive? It could be that the ujoints in the front axle are binding.
what year is this truck? do you have ram assist or is it worm and ball. (meaning you have a regular steering box like the later models)
If its a box, they are pretty straight forward to replace the hydraulic seals. Check the sector shaft comming out the bottom and move the wheels left to rightfrom the steering wheel. If the shaft has side to side movement you might as well replace the box, or have it proffesionaly rebuilt. The internal bushings arent really a do-it yourselfer job.
