My stupid laptop has been trying to do the auto-update with the sp3 for a couple months now, and it keeps (well, something in it keeps) denying access. Turned the antivirus and antispy off, same effect.
I honestly don't care whether it updates or not, but I've put it off so many times that it just rammed itself through one day, it's loaded, but not installed.
4 Desktop PCs, 5 laptop PCs.
All upgraded to SP3 with no ill effects.
Ever since IE 7 came out, I allow the PCs that my wife says I'm responsible for, to "Download Updates, but, allow me to say what and when something is installed."

Help? Maybe? Rant, definitely.
XP3 has some issues.. I deny installing it unless I have a clean install..
They recommend you update all your drivers before installing..
If it keeps bugging you to install and fail you can do 2 things.
1. download the service pack manually and install it. Usually what I do.
2. select custom install and uncheck the sp3 download. When you continue it will ask you if you want to keep the download Or something to that effect. Just click the box that says never download..
I downloaded SP3 a few weeks ago. Did not noticed too much different except IE is slower. Not sure if it is SP3 or Comcast "high speed" internet that seems to be getting slower.

I don't think it's Comcast.. They just increased the speed..
Probably spyware if anything...
To get the faster Comcast speed you need to cycle the modem..
I do power cycle the modem on a regular basis. Even when I down load files the transfer rate is not all that fast.......last night it was around 500K or so.
I haven't been able to install it on my old laptop either. I checked and double checked all the things they say to do and even re downloaded it and it never installed. The computer was acting up anyway so I just bought a new desktop.
