My daughter brought over her laptop because she said that AVG wouldn't run. It said something about a license error when I tried it. ( It had been running before).
I first tried to uninstall it, but it quit with some sort of a file access error. Tried to install the 2012 version, but it quit because it wanted to uninstall the previous stuff first. It suggested that I do a manual uninstall.
Tried to remove the files using explorer first and then the W7 command box -- no go. Message was something about files in use.
Apparently she had her daughter try a system restore from a restore point , but it wouldn't go. ( From what I understand, she didn't know how to get into safe mode -- and neither do I on that one. )
I told her that the simplest solution was probably to get Norton and just go with that. I said that her other option would be to find the restore disks and rebuild the hard drive -- she has an old version of Quicken that she would need to reinstall -- otherwise there's no real issue.
It's a Gateway laptop w/ W7 Home Premium. ( I could get a real dislike for the W7 User Interface, unless you can take it back to something XP like).
Any thoughts? Never really ran into an issue like this before.
I think you will find Norton will advise you of the need to uninstall the existing virus program and will not attempt to install until you do so. Pretty common in my experience.
The inability to run a restore point is curious. I wonder if W7 has a corrupted file.
It is possible AVG corrupted on an update download, something Norton has been famous for in the past.
It has SLllloooooooooowed down every computer that I've had it on, and is a REAL hemmorhoid to uninstall!!! (Nope. Never again.)
AVG.
Avast.
Trend Micro PC-cillin.
You know, I would definitely agree with you about past versions and uninstall used to be a nightmare beyound all else. I have found the new version to be very user friendly and installs without a hitch. But, I did not intend to use it until a monster virus slipped through AVG. It made accessing any of my programs all but impossible and after considerable time and effort around the Internet, I found Norton cleaned in instantly whereas nothing else did. So, at present, I have Norton. Not putting down anyone else's choices, just my experience. I have used AVG and Avast in the past. I have not used PC-cillin, which usually does quite well in the ratings.
