Some of the threads around here are about computers, new ones, old ones, and various programs. I just came back from windows update and found two new updates 1-11-05, 1-17-05, a security update, and a spyware scrubber. Check them out, they are listed as high priorty.
I have been told the Home edition of Windows XP has problems with the Service Pack 2. On the other hand, the Office or Professional edition of Windows XP accepts the Service Pack 2 without any problems. Any experience or viewpoints on the download would be appreciated. I have the Home edition and had to re-stall the entire XP program when I tried to add Service Pack 2
Svc Pack 2 has MANY MANY updates firewalls, security, etc...
our company is avoiding it as long as possible because of the ramifications of the minimum of creating connectivity issues for our 1000's of vpn telecommuters...
I've upgraded to SP2 successfully. The best way is to slipstream it to your current CD and install a fresh copy of XP. It's a much cleaner OS.
And you can make XP run really well. Disable the extra services. I've found it's actually slightly faster then the older XP when their 'tuned' the same.
Well, you know that just because you've purchased your "economy" brand computer from a real computer store, this doesn't mean the Windows XP Pro. OS on it isn't pirated.
All you need to do is try to download SP 1, or any other critical download and you'll be told you do not have a valid product code #.
Next, you'll discover that YBF computer store went out of business.
Then the reality sets in that your computer has a very limited life span as is and you know for sure that YBF.

I built my own computer, and about two months ago installed SP2 and so far no problems. My understanding it is not the computer or OS that has a problem with the install, it makes some of your other programs act funny or not work. There is a list at Microsoft that tell what will and wont work with it.
I ordered the CD, from Microsoft, for SP2. It's a huge install even with the disk. I have XP Home and haven't had a problem with it. I check the update site fairly regular, but also have the auto update feature turned on. There are sometimes some pretty good updates for other stuff there, too.I don't know if I got the spyware thing .. guess I'll have to check and see. I already run three other spyware programs that have been one of the best things I've added to my 'puter.
Been running sp2 since it came out, fought with it for a few months pulling my hair out untill I realised sp2 and norton 2003 didnt get along. I got rid of it and installed AVG and havnt had a problem since, everything else seems to work fine though. The pop-up blocker that comes with sp2 annoys me sometimes but thats my only complaint.
I installed SP2 on my XP Home and it made some programs run funny....meaning not at all....so I restored back to previous date. I have the CD for SP2 but will hold off until Microsoft gets their act together. It's funny....the programs that refused to work right were Microsoft programs also.
