I just bought an old player piano and I plan on getting it into the truck by rolling it up ramps sitting on the tailgate.... then roll it into the truck.
I have no idea what the piano weighs ... it is an older upright. Do you think this will be too much for the tailgate cables?
Can the cables be replaced with stronger chain ... I mean is there room for chain when the tailgate is closed? BTW I also have the new stepgate to contend with when rolling over the handle.
Thanks guys.
I drive a golf cart up on mine all of the time. I weigh 215 and the golf cart weighs around 800 LBS so that equals 1015 lbs. Do you think that piano weighs a 1/2 of a ton?
That piano weighs well in excess of 1000lbs. Also, the weight will be concentrated in a narrow area which can cause the tailgate to bend in the middle. TAKE IT OFF, you will be much happier. Dan.
I use a oem ford duraliner plastic bed liner and tailgate piece with a 3/4 plywood sheet always in the bed. The plywood sheet slides on the bedliner and I slide it back over the gate which spreads the load more evenly over the gate. Then when the heavy item is on the plywood, it will slide in, unless we are talking about something really really heavy, where I just drive with the gate down. When the plywood is getting tore up, I swap for a new piece and use the old one on construction jobs. It keeps the area between the gate and bed from getting tore up also.
if it is that heavy and you are concerned about your truck - spend the $20 and rent a uhaul trailer. Not only will your truck not be in harms way, but the trailer is lower, making it easier to load
We see alot of bent tail gates from loading newer 600lb plus rider snow machines. I think the weight focused on the tracks 15" 0r so contact patch does it when fellas stop or slow down to let the skis set down. To much focused lbs per sqr inch. A steel plate on the gate may fix that. IMO the lower trailer would be on the money. Putting the seat and other moving items piled in the bed would be making wise use of the rig, and look good pulling the trailer at the same time. Happy Holidays to all.
Today I saw that this tailgate comes off as easy as any other tailgate so I will definitely take it off when I load the piano.
I didn't spend this much money on a truck to then have to rent a trailer just to haul a piano ... the truck will haul this piano.
Thanks for all the input guys.
