Can this trans be made to shift without the use of a comp. ( the driver would do the shifting ) get away from the stand alone comp. on a non comp. truck trans swap? if so, could really make this swap money wise, a good thing! thanks,Jim
You have to know the solenoid off and on chart and supply voltage to the solenoids in the right combination to get the gear you want. I dont think its possible to shift a E40D using any thing other than the solenoids, I have never seen a manual valve body for it or seen one in custom with a E4OD, but its probably worth a search.
I used toggle switches on a panel that was on the dash, and the harness for the trans.
After a few runs with the truck I began to hate it, it was a pain to keep up with and it was easy to downshift when you didnt want to. I also found that I never had the need to start out in any other gear other than first. I replaced this system with a factory computer and I stripped the harness to just the necessary wires to run a trans and after a few bugs to work out it is much better to drive.
I am sure you could rig something up cheap but it will require some wiring and some creativity, give it a shot, I just dont recommend it in a offroad truck or the use of toggle switches.
I did this once on a 4r100, it would work the same on the E4OD. The downside was that after about 1000 miles the forward clutch drum blew apart. I didn't have anything controlling the electronic pressure control and the forward clutch drum can't handle maximum pressure.
I used the shift solenoid on/off chart and the TRS to control when each solenoid was turned on and off. It did shift firm, but not excessively harsh. The part that needs to be figured out is how to lower the pressure in first gear.
thank you mark, through a search i was unable to find a manual vale body and the performance companies out there do not talk of such a thing even when retro fitting!found a post from another forum where this subject was brought up and no one could find such a vale body (someday maybe?) thanks again, jim
