Whats the MAP do? (in general)
Is that it on the firewall or is that just the plugin?
That means the MAP sensor is OK but you may still have a pin hole in it.
A boost gage will tell you real quick.

MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure.
Simple explaination: It senses the pressure from the turbo and relays the info to the PCM for fuel regulation.

I also have the same question, I think it means that the sensor is BAD.

Sorry, when you said it made a difference I ***'u'me'd you meant worse.
The MAP may be Bad.
Did you check the rubber hose going to it? Could have a pin-hole or might be plugged.

Before you buy a new one try swapping in a known good one or get the truck scanned.

I checked the hose but they disapear into the wiring going both ways.
One short chunk seems to go into a box just below the sensor.

So if the truck ran better with the sensor unplugged that means the sensor is no good?

How's the diesel taste?
Yep the MAp sensor is bad. The engine is running off the PCM when it's unplugged. It guesses at the proper amount of boost it should have. It will
run much better with a new MAP sensor. You can find the part number in in my signature.

That's for the 1999-2003 trucks. I'm not a real fan of fooling any sensor on our trucks.
That tells the PCM that the boost levels are safe and will not de-fuel the engine. If you want more power then a chip/injectors is the way to go.

One more question?
I phoned my usual auto parts supplier and he cant find that sensor anywhere in his supply system but if he did have one it would be $120.00 , does that sound right?

Okay, here's another idea..... I was reading on the SD forum about another guys thats kinda having the same issue, no power, smoke etc. Turns out that there is a filter assembly in the fuel pickup in the tank that can be clogged. Okay, now our trucks are most likely different, but what it DOES make me think about, is the fuel pickup tubes. I think I remember that a few people had problems with pickup tubes....... I don't remember exactly what, but it gave them these issues as well. I still could be other things mention before, I know you are waiting on parts. But this is another idea...... This problem along with your SD vibs are bugging the crap of me. I actually think about this sh@t when I'm not on here. Sad I guess.
