thank you all so much for the replys I really appreciate it. I can see its not like my 79 Chevy 305 to 350 swap! Now I see why Chevys are more popular than Fords but hey....I LOVE the fact that my truck is different from the normal car show vehicles. The shows I go to are FLOODED with 70s and 80s Chevys but I am the ONLY 80s ford truck there.....and I like that, cuz my truck gets more attention than theirs! I have pretty much decided on the 351 but should I go 351C or 351M??
The v8's are the standard way to go. But if your priority is being different, and you are up to the challenge(and also have lots of money), you could build the six up. I can guarantee you will not see many six cylinders chromed out with multiple carbs, split header with dual exhaust, and a lumpy cam.
There is really not much reason to lift the hood at a show if your truck has a 460 or 351w. A tricked up six would be a reason. It will be a lot harder hot rod than a v8, but car nuts realize this and would appreciate the work that went into it.

hes not looking to switch trannies tho. You definately get the different factor with a 400 tho as well. Most ppl refer to them as a boat anchor...they are just undereducated on the topic. Ive creeped the 335 series forum many times and found some very impressive numbers on very basic builds, which you could also get with a 460 tho too.
So I break it down like this, in my head.
-For the v8 rumble, hot rod massive power effect..go big or go home. 460.
-For the v8 rumble with a twist of difference, the 400 will achieve this.
-For a complete unique engine a hot 300 would be something to inquisite about
-For a simple v8 swap the 351w will accomplish this.
Theres so many options with the early 80s fords, I dont think any route you go will disappoint you. My suggestion is just pick something and stick with it, youll have something to be proud of no matter what you choose.
Happy FORD truckin'!

tranny swap isnt hard at all in that era of truck. Especially a C6 to C6 swap.
Now this brings something else to mind. Just hypothetically speaking here...if you were to switch trannies...the C6 is the only easy swap if you go with a 460 or 400. The only other ford auto tranny I know of that is a direct bolt bolt up to those engines is the E4OD and its electrically controlled (auto) so that adds another bag of beans, BUT it is 4 speed o/d tranny.
With the 300, 302/351 you have more options in an auto tranny. Theres the C4, C6 and AOD, all of which are simple mechanically operated without any electronic controls. The AOD is also a 4 speed with overdrive. You can also get an E4OD with the 302/351 style bellhousing.
I just wanted to throw that out there for some tidbits of info for ya.
i wasnt suggesting any lol...just throwing that out there so he has a little more info at his disposal. The only perk to an AOD is the overdrive and lack of electronics.
and in a later thought...perhaps im getting ahead of myself lol. We'll see what he wants to do, with all this new info to absorb and go from there hah.
