HELP with 460 engine swap.....

Hey guys. I'm sure there is a thousand diffrent places out there for this info but this seems like a good place to get some good help. I have a 1977 ford F150. I have the old 351m pulled out right now and am going to put a 460 from an 85 in it. What engine mounts do I need? (if any from the stock 460) Where can I purchase them from? Is there anything else I need to to be prepared to do? I am completely new to the engine swap area. I'm excited, but very intimidated. If anybody has the time to do a walkthrough with me...I would appreciate it more than you know! Thanks!!

If I remember right you have to have the frame perches and stock pickup mounts for the 460 I'm not sure about the 85 mounts though. It will bolt to your tranny.

It is a very easy swap. My little sister and I did everything in a weekend. I used L&L motor mounts but you can get the frame perches from a era correct truck. That way you can get replacement rubber mounts rather easy. I'd also change your timing chain for a straight up set. What trans are you using? I used a C-6 and had to extend my kickdown a few inches. Can't remember if it was because of the 460, new intake, or carb. Maybe all of the above but it had to be done.

2WD: You will need the R & L frame mounted engine perches.

The R & L brackets that bolt to the block the engine rubber insulators bolt to.

The two rubber insulators that are the same R & L.

All from a 1973/79 F100/350 w/a 460.

1975/91 Econoline 460 mounts are not the same, neither is anything from 1980 and later.

What i did was kind of a home made and was a little more work but i didn't feel like wait on the right ones. I bought a set from advanced for a mid 80's 460 which you might already have, cut the studs off that go through the frame purches, i set the motor in the truck and got it centered on the purches and marked where the new bolt needed to be. I pulled the motor back out took the mounts off drilled out where i marked the hole stuck a bolt through and welded it on the back side of the mount. Some people might not agree with how i did it, but it was a cheap way to do it and i didn't feel like ordering the right ones. They have held together for 2 years now. I was also dealing with a 4 wheel drive to.

I have also done the swap and had to lengthen my kickdown cable as well. One thing you will need to keep and eye on is depending on the brackets you have on the front of the motor. The power steering pulley might get into your gear box for the power steering. I have done this swap on two different trucks. One was a 78 F250 and the other was a 77 F250 both 4x4's. The 77 i ended up taking a grinder to the one lip of the gear box to allow the motor to flex due to the torque. The truck i am redoing right now has about an 1 in of clearance. Not sure what the difference between the years or setup. Also not the most familiar with the F150 Steering. Wiring harness will transfer as long as your 85 motor is carbeurated. Bottom radiator hose could get into power steering belt, i have that problem right now, currently working on fixing that but for now just have the hose zip tied back to hold out of the way. Not sure if your wanting to get some more power out of it cause it is one hell of a difference between the motors your changing. But you can buy aftermarket timing chain and gears and zero your timing out and it will give you a little more power and a little better mileage. From the factory Ford retarted them a little bit for emissions purposes. The stock timing gear on the crankshaft only has one groove for the key way in it as to an aftermarket on has 3, you can retard it, zero, or advance it. That is stuff off the top of my head that i have ran into/done with my swaps. I have went from straight 6 to 351 windsor, 351 modified to 460, 460 to straight six, and another modified to 460. The modified to 460 is a fairly easy swap to do. Hope this helps

thanks fireman!! Do you know if I can re-use my same clutch out of the 351m? Its a brand new clutch so if i can save a few bucks that would be good. Also, what do I need for a radiator, and know any good places online to purchase? Any idea on headers? I'm hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew here....

you will have to buy aftermarket motor mounts or fab your own. the bellhousing is the correct bolt pattern. i believe your clutch will work but not 100% sure. Your original radiator should work also. some 70s trucks with 460s or 390s mite have had larger capacity radiators if needed. Transdapt, bronco graveyard, l&l, and lmc all carry motor mounts for this swap. a couple different styles to choose from. headers get a little tricky for 4x4s. think ive heard some hedmans fit but not sure.

You can use the stock 2wd truck 460 exhaust manifolds. If you go with headers then go with L&L products. Hands down the best quality and fitment I've seen and used. Also recomend getting the bigger radiator. My stock 351 radiator was fine at speed but tried to overheat in traffic

Radiator wise i am using the same radiator as what the modified was using and i have no problem with it overheating. The clutch i'm not sure about but if you are wanting to save money headers are not the way to go because the couple sets that i found and priced your looking anywhere from 400-600 dollars.
