I was interested in swapping in a 460 in my 85 F-150 which currently has a 300 six. I am looking at a "turn key" engine that has intake, carb, etc. My truck has the C6 tranny and 9 inch rear end so I know it can handle the added power. I know the following things need to be replaced with this swap: radiator, accessory brackets, motor mounts, and flywheel.......am I overlooking something? Thanks in advance!
Well that sucks I wasn't planning on a new transmission......is there ANY V-8 that will work? 302, 351??? The reason I want it in MY truck is because it is in mint condition.....I have yet to find another truck of this era in good condition and the ones I see that are are LOTS of $. I really just want the V-8 sound for the car shows but the extra power wouldn't hurt either!
Ok I have my mind set on a 351 now.....but I can't decide between a windsor or cleveland!! I know I will need radiator, accessory brackets, motor mounts, and flywheel.......am I overlooking something?
yeh get a windsor. clevelands are typically high rpm motors. and it would be more authentic with a windsor. Ford stopped putting Clevelands in trucks in i think 77, maybe 76. cant quite remember.
Ok now y'all are CERTAIN my C6 wont work with a 460? I was under the impression a C6 was a C6
Sorry, if it was a chevrolet, it would be a different story. Why Ford had to have so many different bellhousing patterns, and so many different engine families is beyond me. It will take you awhile to get up to speed on the Ford stuff.
By the way, I would stay away from a 351 cleveland. As someone else mentioned, Ford never offered this engine in the 80-up trucks, so the exhaust would be custom, as well as all the other little doo-dads like belts, hoses, and you would have to find a rear sump oil pan setup. I can't remember if the 351m/400 oil pan will fit the 351c.
thank you all so much for the replys I really appreciate it. I can see its not like my 79 Chevy 305 to 350 swap! Now I see why Chevys are more popular than Fords but hey....I LOVE the fact that my truck is different from the normal car show vehicles. The shows I go to are FLOODED with 70s and 80s Chevys but I am the ONLY 80s ford truck there.....and I like that, cuz my truck gets more attention than theirs! I have pretty much decided on the 351 but should I go 351C or 351M??
I would still say 351w by far, as much as i like to be different...the 351w would be the most rational choice, as i mentioned its been around a long time (longer than all other 351s) so used parts are easy to come by, as well as the aftermarket for them is huge. Not to mention the 351m uses the same BH as the 460.
Ok 351W it is!!! Thanks to everyone for their replies. Now I just gotta find one for a good price....unless there is some way I can make the 300 run and sound like a hot rod......
