Heater problems

COLD weather is here! I have heat while the truck is in motion. As soon as the truck stands still cold air come out the vents. The coolant level is full. Thermostat stays at the same position, 50% of the scale. Any advice?

Thermostat might need replacing.

The gauge on the dash is a thermometer not a thermostat.

(One tells how warm it is, the other controls how warm it is.)

There may be a problem with the vacuum line to the blend door. When driving the engine produces more vacuum and pulls the door over to the heat side. However when sitting at idle the vacuum is reduced allowing the door to open and mixing cold air into the system. Try this; when the heater is warmed up find a place to park and let the engine idle, when the heater turns cold put the vehicle in neutral and rev the engine. If the heat returns I would look to the blend door actuator as the point of the leak.

Thanks for the help. My dealer said to replace the water pump and that took care of it. He said the pump was getting weak and during high idle and running down the raod the output of the pump goes to near normal conditions. It can't keep up at low idle. Hope it work, so far it has.

The impeller blade was starting to seperate from the shaft so it wouldn't spin at idle.

I just had this same thing happen on my Durango.

I always thought that highest vacuum was produced at idle. As you accelerate, the further open the throttle body is, the less vacuum produced???

Doesn't it even turn from vacuum to boost with a turbo?

The higest vacuum is produced when you decelerate. In other words when you go down a hill and the engine is holding the drive train and slowing the truck down.

Ha Ha, I know because after all I'm old enough to remember VACUUM WIPERS. Under power in high gear these things would almost quit, let up on the gas and they would go crazy flopping like a fish out of water.

Back in the good ole day's, you know 55 Ford gas 24.9 a gallon, bottle of coke .5, pack of smokes .26, and car payment 5.00 a week !!!!!!!!!!!! I almost forgot 1.00 an hour wages.

I was a pump jockey back in 1975-76 (Yes kids, we pumped your gas for you!) and Phillips 66 regular was $.29 a gallon back then. Got your windows cleaned, oil checked and tires aired up if you asked. I had a ball at that job......
