Alternator problem

Guy's this is the first time for me to visit this list, I read the 61-79 daily. I have a problem that hopefully you can help me with. I have an alternator on a 97 Taurus GL 3.0L that seems to have the bearings going south. The sound it is making is like the power steering pump going bad (whining). I priced a reman at one parts house and it's $250.00 less core.

My question is How many alternators were used with the serpentine belt system, that might be interchanged on my engine? I am thinking about going to a local salvage yard for a used one and try to save some money. The alt. is still charging OK but the sound is driving the CFO crazy.

Thanks for any help, and no razing about posting this to a truck list please.:-)
