How many have used the wooden dowel vr the wire for measuring the stroke of a FE.
While I have tried both, I have found the smaller wire to work much better, and using a white jacketed house electrical wire the easiest to read. The wooden dowel didn't seem to be as free in the opening.
There are two methods of measuring, one is to rotate the engine a couple of revs and mark with a sharpie the total travel of the piston, another is to remove the two outer end plugs 1 & 4 or 5 & 8 mark the inserted object and measure the distance between the two marks.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
JOWILKER, about 2 years ago you helped me ID my engine with the old wooden dowel trick. I didnt know if i had the 352 or 390. Turned out to be a 390. I appreciate it. Ive been without a computer for the time since then put somehow remembered my password. Thanks for that help if I didnt say so then. Wire does sound easier though
I liked the idea of the dowel trick, but didn't ever get a chance to use it because my head gasket blew first. Removing the head to fix that gave me the opportunity to measure it directly with the vernier calipers.

Some day hope to shorten to a 104" wheelbase as part of a Broncification project

I can't see where dowel is better or worse than wire. But I think the rotation of the engine in ONE cylinder is the best way to measure stroke. I feel there is to much chance of something being off from one cylinder to the next.
