C6 tolerences

Anyone here know the tolerences on the C6 that could give me a hand on some numbers? I have one with low miles that I want to install but it has some play in it, and is out of speck by about .030.

What part of the tranny are you measuring? Most parts on the C6 can be brought into tolerence by selecting a different size snap ring or thrust washer. For example, if you are checking total endplay which must be .008-.044 and you measured .074, then you need to get a thrust washer that is .030-.066 thicker than the one you have now. The selective thrust washers available have thickness of .057, .074, .089, .104, and .119. If your thrust washer is allready thicker than .089, then you might want to look for another tranny.

Thanks, an old FTEer in Raleigh is helping me and I got this E message back from him.

John, I checked out your C6 today. It looks really good inside! Some water and crud had made its way to the pan but other than that it was clean. The pan had a hole in it at one time and was brazed up. I took off the valve body and checked the end play of the inner assembly. It measured at around .072. That is out of spec by a large amount! It should be between .008 to .044.

There are selective thruse washers that are used to bring this play into spec. The first three are plastic and the larger ones are metal. Your transmission has the metal one in it so it may be the largest that can be used. There is a company that makes shimes that are placed behind all nine of the thrust washers in the transmission to help when this situation occures. Unfortunatley the tranny must be taken apart to install them.

I am not sure if this needs any attention. You could call the tranny people that rebuilt it and ask them if this is worth worring about.

Jon

We wanted to run that past someone else for a second opinion, and we all know there are plenty of those here. If you need help, it will find you here. The tranny had set behind a pretty new 360 and the last inspection sticker was for 97. It had a metal tag glued to the side of the case, from the rebuilder and I called them to find that is was rebuilt in Nov. 94.

John, I could be wrong, but your buddy might be backward on the statement that the metal ones are thicker than the plastic. The reason I say this is that when I did my C6, I purchased another complete C6 at a wrecking yard to use the best parts from both to make one good one. My original tranny had a .074 metal and the other had a .119 plastic washer, so there is still a chance that what you have is ok. Changing this selective washer is easy; all you have to do is remove the front pump.

What causes this excess play, is it case wear? I'll send him a link to this thread.

The case itself doesn't wear; it is the components inside the case that wear. There are several thrust surfaces inside that wear; although the wear is typically slight on individual components, it all will add to the total endplay reading. I also believe that the original machining tolerences of the case and/or components inside were not held very close. In other words, I wouldn't doubt that many C6's came off the assembly line, brand new, with thicker selective thrust washers to compensate for the poor tolerence. They probably aim for the .089 washer but end up with some requiring thinner and some requiring thicker.
