Due, again, to replace the rusted exhaust bolts. Been reading about the different headers that some of you folks have installed. My question is: How much more exhaust noise can be heard in the cabin of the truck? Its a family vehicle mostly used for towing the trailer. I expect that it will be a little louder because of the headers, but will it become annoying on the long trips and for the few day trips I need it for?
I've got Thorley's on my 04' which have 14Ga tubing. They are louder than the stock logs but not annoying at all, at least to me. I really like when I'm cruising down the highway and nail the skinny pedal you can hear the engine load up. Makes me smile. If for some reason you don't like the sound a slightly louder muffler will help drown out the header noise.
I have the full banks powerpack with aFM 70 muffler and I can't hear the headers just the muffler. I only can hear the header noise bounce off fences and parked cars as I drive by with the windows down.
With stock exhaust, and y-pipe (and even after swapping in the ebay y-pipe) the cheapo ebay headers were a LITTLE louder than stock.
Nothing annoying - the wife didn't complain
How is the fitment of the ebay headers? Any clearance issues? Do they line up with the downpipes? Welding quality?
I see a lot of headers for the v10 on ebay, priced from $125 - $250. Seems like there are som design differences on some of them, so I do not think they all come from the same manufacturer. But the specs regarding material, tube sice etc seems to be the same for all of them. Difficult to know wich ones to choose
I am considering headers, but are not sure what trouble that can be expected. How difficult is it to remove the old ones? I reed about trouble with broken studs and such things.
I would like to go with the Ford shorty headers however I only see them listed for the 2004 2valve 6.8 and the 2005 3valve 6.8 F-250's. I have a 2001 F-350. Anyone know if the 2004 2valve headers will fit earlier than the 2004 models?
The Ford motorsports headers were brought up in a thread here a couple months ago. They said headers for the 04' would fit earlier models. 99'-04' V10s are 2Vs and physically identical. They should fit no problem. Headers for the 05'up 3V will not fit the 99'-04' 2V V10.
I've been researching trying to decide which I want. Leaning toward Thorley's. I don't know the advantage of the 'tri-y' Thorley, vs. Banks, FMS etc. I am looking for a bit more lower end.
Tri Ys are supposed to make the most low and mid range torque.
Got this from a magazine article.
"TRI-Y HEADERS
Tri-Ys consist of a four-into-two-into-one design, with four primary pipes paired into two slightly larger-diameter secondary pipes before reaching a single collector. One advantage of this design is that the increasing pipe diameter broadens the torque curve, providing higher torque throughout the low- and mid-rpm range than a similar four-into-one style header. Doug Thorley Headers specializes in tri-Ys, specifically for the RV and truck markets in which lots of low-rpm torque is important.
The principle behind tri-Y design is that the most effective port separation occurs by pairing the cylinders that are firing farthest apart, in other words 180 distributor degrees (or a complete crankshaft revolution) apart. Unfortunately, the firing order on a Chevy engine would require pairing cylinders (1 & 6, 8 & 5, 4 & 7, and 3 & 2) from opposite sides of the block. By pairing cylinders 1 & 5, 3 & 7, 2 & 4, and 6 & 8, tri-Ys come as close as possible."
I think I read sometime back, that you had Thorley's, dkf. Without having to search and read through every post on headers to find it, how do you like them performance wise? What exhaust did you pair them with and did you change the 'y' pipe?
I had a Whipple on mine for a while, no, I don't expect the same gains, I pulled the SC because it caused issues I wasn't all that willing to deal with. In short, it wasn't 'all that'. I want to increase torque without a ton of expensive parts breaking, wearing out or blowing up. I have read what Banks claims you will gain from their set up, any idea on numbers from Thorley?
I would be interested in Thorley numbers also as I am also going to be replacing my exhaust front to back. Banks is nice stuff but their set up is probably around $2,000 for the complete set up.
The Thorleys replace the everything from the cylinder head to the triangular flange in front of the cat, so the stock y-pipe is eliminated. Banks replaces the stock y also, thats the main reason why the two are up there pricewise compared to shorties.
The improvement in the low and mid range was very noticeable to me. I noticed extra grunt down low and the truck pulled hills better and didn't have to shift in spots it did before. When it had to downshift though I could tell there was more power their. I got the ceramic coated Thorleys however they still need to be touched up to keep them from rusting because they are steel. I use a wire brush and some VHT header paint to keep rust at bay.
