Vaseline? Put a loose screwdriver in it all the way to the handle. Push the handle till seated.

For a cheap non locking hood release I found a generic push pull cable from an Advance Auto that I made work with the factory locking hood latch. I use some cable clamps to hold the sheathing in place at the latch assembly. Works good, less than $20 invested in it.
