E5TZ16914A .. Locking Hood Cable / Fits: 1980/86 F100/350 & Bronco / Obsolete.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

There's another listed for 1987/91, wonder if that'll work?

The compatibility factor just dawned on me why (why it didn't dawn on me before, I dunno).

1980 F100/350/Bronco is a totally different body style, while the Econolines are the same 1975/91.

The 1975/91 Econoline locking hood latch is the same as the 1973/79 F100/350's, but not the cable.

In searching through all my catalogs I find that Jeff's Bronco Graveyard lists 3 hood release handle and cable assemblies. These fit: 80-86, 87-91, and 92-96. The accompanying photo shows what I believe is the 80-86 style with just the "T" handle and cable assembly. Just how the cable is attached to the "T" handle is unknown to me. Maybe if someone out there has an old one they could take apart it might fill in the blanks.

cable replacement

As far as the cable I replaced mine on a 77 F-100. I had bought a used lock and the original cable didn't last a week. As I recall the original cable was 3/32" which seems impossible to find at least in a small quantiy. I found 1/16" (2/32") and used it with crimp ferules and it's been working for a couple of years. I just take care not to yank hard on it as it's a tad smaller.

I've found my solution

This is what I came up with for my repair. A good bicycle shop is all you need, and a little patience. I purchased the swedge for the loop end from my local hardware store. I won't cut the length and put a swedge on for the loop until I have it installed on my truck. My truck didn't come with this option so I have a hole to drill and a cable to route. Does anybody know where I might get a new grommet? Mine is shot. I know I could use a 3/4" plug and just punch a hole in it but the correct one would be nice.

Are you referring to the grommet?

It was the cable and handle also bracket to mount it under the dash.

For anyone interested in making the cable from the 1980-1986 trucks with locking handles work, here are the diagrams from each truck.

These are things you do when you have too much time on your hands and you like to tinker. I knew that JBG had hood release assemblies that will work. My goal here was to attempt a repair on my old locking type, if possible, and then let everyone else in on it. I also solicited ideas so that maybe I wouldn't re-plow the same field. There are lots of these old style locking hood releases out there in salvage yards and on e-bay but they all suffer from the same thing, age. Mine came from e-bay and for $15.00 my local locksmith changed the lock tumblers to fit my ignition key.

Final Installment. The new to locking hood release in now installed in "Pandora's Box". All of my forward planning and patience worked out well as the installation process was quite simple. Overall, I'm very pleased with how everything turned out. I posted a couple more pics of the finished pieces installed.
