Im swapping in a Crane 444232 in my 89 351. Im going to try to keep all of my questions in this thread as I go so i dont make too many.
My progress so far is Radiator/condesor, fan, upper intake and throttle body have all been removed. Im not 100% sure on the procedure for removing the lower intake, though it doesnt look too hard. I just have to figure out how to disconnect the fuel line and relieve the fuel pressure if i have to? I also found a broken sensor? Its right above the thermostat housing and the inside appears to be broken out. Hopefully someone knows what im talking about, im going to try to get pics soon.
I still havent ordered my parts since ive just been pulling things apart slowly.
I need to know EVERYTHING i need to order, down to the smallest of gaskets. I also need to know what kind of timing set I should get. roller, non roller? i dont know the difference. Also need to know what that plug is if anyone knows.
Thats if for now, I will update frequently hopefully with pictures soon. Any info, tips or tricks are appreciated.
There's a scharder valve on the fuel line for relieving pressure. You need to buy a Haynes manual and read the section on removing and re-installing a cam. You need a double roller timing chain for a non-roller cam. These are readily available through autozone, jegs, summit racing etc etc Since you're going to have the upper/lower intake off now is a good time to replace the valve cover gaskets along with your upper/lower gaskets, water pump, timing chain etc Ford Racing sells this kit through Jegs: Ford Racing M-6003-A50 - Ford Racing Hi-Performance Engine Gasket Sets - JEGS
It has everything you need for $83.99...you'll have stuff you don't need this time around leftover but that can be used at a later date.
local parts place should have the small tool for disconnecting different sized ford fuel connections. It may be a pain using it just right! Seems like it took a year for me to get a good handle on it. IF you are just doing a Cam swap try to make it as simple as you can Just remove what you need to to get the timing cover off, and you will need a timing cover/water pump gasket kit remove the distributor and all that stuff. Then take the upper and lower intake off should only have to disconnect the fuel connection and pull the lower intake off with the fuel rail attached. Need new upper and lower intake gaskets for reinstalliing. get the lifters out before you pull the cam that may get a little hairy if you dont.... Good luck with it all of it!!
Thanks for the help. Im going to continue tonight when i get home. What tool is needed to pull the vibration dampner? can it be had for cheap or rented at oreillys?
