OK, I have almost everything back together. Hopfully ready to start tonight. How fast do i run the drill? Is there anything else i need to know before i try to start it?
Once you start to build oil pressure you'll feel the load on the drill, don't burn the thing up just run it where it feels comfortable for 30 sec or so. Good luck.
I use a 3/8 Cordless drill (Makita 18V) and a 12" long 1/4" drive extenstion with a 5/16" deepwell socket (all ofthisis available at Sears) to get to the oil pump drive shaft. Be sure the drill is going counter-clockwise and hold on WITH BOTH HANDS!!!!! Should start to see oil coming out of the pushrods after about 15-20 seconds of running. Button everything back up and then it sould be ready to go...
Im glad you said that KDPate. I assumed i was going to run the drill clockwise. I had a game last night so i didnt get the chance to try to start it. Hopefully tonight.
edit: just read where conanski said to run the drill counterclockwise also. I need to read more thoroughly.
also, i already have everything together so i wont be able to see the pushrods. Any other way to check or should i hope i put everything together right and go for it?
dang...no start, motor turns over and pops out of the exhaust a little bit. Is the timing out? I thought i kept everything in check and and at tdc. I know it was a tdc because when i replaced the timing chain the marks were lined up. Whats the deal?
Try advancing the distributor.. push the TFI module right up against the thermostat housing to see if it makes any difference, if it does then you have the distributor off 1 tooth.
Good news. My dad had a buddy of his who is a mechanic come over. The timing was off. We go it going and timed. But theres an antifreeze leak somewhere i cant track down. Im going to check all the hose clamps tommorow morning, then go from there.
When we had it going it sounded mean. In the morning Im going to try to get the antifreeze deal down and get it on the road to see how it does. Sure was a good feeling to hear it roar to life.
I want to thank all of you guys that helped me, and hopefully this thread can help someone in the future.
Any other things to watch out for when i start driving it?
I got to put it through its paces today. I was pretty impressed. It pulls hard way up in the rpms. Where as before it would just rev out it keeps going. Makes me realize I need to get the rear end turning both wheels. If i got to hard on the gas in 2nd the back right tire just spun.
Im going to need to do some more adjustments, the throttle is stiff now..i dont know why, must have messed something up during the swap.
Also I still have no heat! new thermostat and flushed heater core. wtf...
Air bubble maybe in the cooling system? Might want to leave the cap off or loose and let it run until anti-freeze comes pouring out. Had hell getting the ar bubble out after I replaced the t-stat and heater core on my truck (took about 3 or 4 attempts)....
Yep.. run it with the rad cap off until the thermostat opens and you can visibly see coolant circulating in the rad. It may also help if you park the truck with the front elevated a little.
Added coolant, drove it for about a half hour total tonight. I cant get enough of it. So much power way up into the rpms, where it used to feel like it was gonna blow now feels likes its in the meat of the powerband. So far i have only got it to 4 grand. Sometime ill figure out where it stops, but not until i make sure everything is solid.
Still no heat unfortunatly. I didnt have alot of time to mess with it but i felt the heater core cover and its pretty warm, but the air blowing out is lukewarm.
