What would YOU PAY?

Friends, I need some advice. A friend wants me to buy his truck, but I would like for you all to tell me what you think I should offer for it.

It is a 2003 2wd CC XLT w/ 100k miles (7.3 of course). He is the 2nd owner and some horrible wiring aside, it is in cherry condition. It is the same thing I have only newer.

He needs out from under it, but what do you all think I should offer?

Thanks in advance all!!!!

It sounds a LOT like mine, David. I paid 21k for mine when it had 60k on the clock. Today, with 100k on it, I'm thinking 15k or so, +/- depending on how cherry it is. Mine is in exceptional shape I think, so I would try to get 16ish out of it.

first things first, friends are involved, so see what he owes on it....if you want to keep him from thinking you reamed him it is delicate negotiations....If you are willing to take over the payments/ pay off what he owes on it for the truck everyone will be happy. If he is in dire need of cash make him pick a number first....takes the load off you.

He owes 9500. He mentioned book at 18k but told him that was a pipe dream.

I honestly don't think I can offer much more than he owes. I have seen much newer trucks priced for a bit more.

Only reason I am considering is so I can give my dad mine.

going by todays true blue book (EBAY!) $10 - $11k would be fair market. Offer to take over payments first if he wont go for it, offer $10.5k

I would do what Leo said, being a friend and an all, ask him what he would he give it to you for and if the price isn't right just tell your friend you don't want to go that high.

Without doing the research that some of the others have alreayd done, I could see something in the $12K-$13K range given today's market. Considering the undefined (and still potentially unknown??) wiring issues, I can see taking that price down another $1,000.

When I got my '02 two years ago with 114K on the clock, I paid almost $18 for it. I know that the market has changed, and you're looking at an '03, but the quoted book of $18 is no where near reality, like you said.

Being that he's your friend, I would offer between $10,500 and $11,000 and then go from there.

His $18k price is a pipe dream, unless he's putting a bag with at least $6,000 cash on the back seat for the buyer. It's just not gonna happen. $10,500 or $11,000 is fair, gets him out of the deal, and gets you a truck you like. He may get all butt-hurt about not being able to make $7k plus off the deal, but maybe what would be best would be to offer to take pics & post a CL ad. Let him see how many responses he gets with an $18k asking price.

I agree with these guys, but I'd NEVER sell mine today for that... LMAO!!

I'm looking at if from a seller's perspective, so it's a bit different point of view. One question to add to the mix: Does it have good, fresh tires or is it something you'll have to but in a year or so? That's another $800 or so right there....

I agree here! KBB is so far off its silly - they dont take into affect the most important factors. Plus its 2WD - I personally will never even consider a 2wd truck. To me, its almost as important as the 7.3 itself! maybe thats because i live in Michigan though. but trying to sell the truck in the north would be extremely difficult because lack of 4wd

I bought mine a year ago for just under $20K. Lariat, 4wd and a fiberglass tonneau. It had 146K but checked out okay. I am the 2nd owner (the truck was bought local and regularly serviced locally so I was able to get an OASIS AND a maint. history from the dealership too).

That was back when fuel prices weren't much of a concern. 2wd, XLT and a soft diesel market make it much less than the $18K he wants. I'd pay $18K for an '05 4x4 6.0.

If you want to keep your friend, I would not buy the truck from him. Money has a way of destroying friendships. Unless you have lots of money, and can offer him what he wants, I'd sit back and pass this one up.

my .02 cents worth...

Dave

He said he would need to have 16k for it. I graciously declined, but told him I would take the note over if it comes down to it. He said he is going to try and find another buyer.

He is hurting for money and the payment on the truck are there every month. I have seen 05-07 selling for the 16-20k range around here. With the new president, I look for diesel to go was past $5 soon, and the trucks will once again be worth that much less.

I want my next truck to be 4x4, so we will see. Thanks for all the responses. Reps sent!
