need opinion on old ford

hey y'all! haven't been on here in a long time. been on vacation. still am as i type this up. a few days ago i came across a 1958 4 door ford fariline i think. i know it's a 58 ford. so i talked to my friend who is selling it. he says make him an offer. the car has a 289 (not original). the car runs, but theres no ignition. the paint is a 2 tone blue and white. he has all the galss for it but the windhseild. the interior is all gone but he says he has it. the floor is rotted out. to start the car you have to hot wire it due to no ignition. so how much do you all think this worth? i was gonna offer between 500 to 600

I'd check out the tires and give him that value for the whole car. If it's got a clear title I'd give him another 50 bucks. Your not talking about a collector car here so that way you could have a whole bunch of fun trying to put it back together and not "get hurt"

ya i agree offer him the value of the tires, and maybe 50 bucks for the motor, as it sounds like its in tough condition.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 11:36 AM (EST)]Sounds like it is very, very, rough. Rotten floors? Did Fred Flintstone own this car? Buy it for the parts, maybe. $500 - $600, no way. Try about $100 - $200 and consider closely tires, glass, seats, engine, tranny, frame, sheet metal etc. If this guy is truly a friend, then advise him in the reality of the problems with regard to restoration. If he is expecting that price range, suggest he part it out. If you are thinking restoration, open your wallet son, or just keep looking. Welcome back.

i looked over the car yesturday. the floors arn't rotten. theres just 2 bad spots where rust has taken over. replacement floor panels will fix it up no prob. he has all the interoir, but it' in a building. all of it is in good shape.

the 289 runs smoth. just theres no igniton. all the chrome, is there and in great shape. it was last driven 4 years ago, but it was started each year and it ran. the body has minor rust but no dents. he cn find me a winsheild but ill have to pay for it. he can also install it for me. he wants 900 for the car. it will only take 4 grand incluing a quick paint job to get it running. perfect resto car. it'll only take about a year off her and there work on weekends to get her back and on the road. what do you all think?

oh, the title is clean, and the car was never in a accident.

Too Bad it's a 4-dr instead of being a 2-dr or Ragtop.

Joseph just keep inmind that you can spend $500 plus on brakes, $400 on tires. And unless you paint it yourself or have agood friend that can do it $4000.00 on paint and body.
Remember your in Canada and ALL the repro parts are made in the States. Some of those manufactures don't even know were Canada is and you can pretty well double the advertised US price.
Sounds like a fun project though and I certanly wouldn't discourage you from trying it $500 or $600 is probably tops ( thats 350 or 400 US for our American friends).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 03:08 PM (EST)]Joeseph: Everything Gorstep says, take to the bank. I think you need to take a hard look at this project. Add up the pluses in one column and the minuses in another. Look at the evaluation and make a decision. Forget your emotion. Just do it logically. You can't lose if you do it that way. There will be other projects to come along. Hell, you could buy this car, sink enough money into it that would have bought it restored and then some. Be patient. Like Dennis said,if it was a ragtop, or even a coupe, different story. Now the Ranchero, that would be really cool.

I read somewhere on the net that station wagons are really coming on strong in value. There was an auction in Denver , I think last January, and the station wagons surprised everyone. I am keeping my eyes open for one myself.

Good luck, in whatever you decide.

Hey Vampiro - it sounds like you've really got a thing for this car. If that's the case, I say go for it. I'd probably try to get it for $500-$600. These old cars & trucks in their unrestored state are only worth something to the one that wants it. I don't see how a value can be placed on it by the shape of the tires.

Big thing is make sure all the little stuff is there also, like the door handles, all the dash ***** and gadgets. That small stuff will nickle/dime you more than you think. Also, if the chrome is in good shape, store it in the house wrapped up if possible. Chrome is expensive to have redone. Sometimes the aftermarket parts are cheaper than the re-chroming. As for the bodywork and painting, if I can do it, You can too! Plus the bodywork forum on this site is awesome.

Edited for Brien's post -

The '41 we're restoring (not to orig.) is a hobby that we are definately spending more on than we could sell it for, but being an old vehicle that we both really like, we have no intention of ever selling it and hope that the next generation finds the same passion with our truck. If you really like this car, get it, if you don't, look until you find the one that you can't do without.

As to be expected everybody has different ideas about this. Mine are closer to Carlene's. From the second post you did it sounds like the car isn't in too bad a shape. I've been checking the restorables for either a 64-66 F100 or an old Mustang. As you've found, they aren't cheap. I'm of the opinion that owning a beautiful old car/truck is only part of the joy. The best part is in knowing that you brought it back to life yourself. It's not the money you spend on it or the end value, but the sweat, busted knuckles, blood, "cuss words", and tears that give the car it's worth. My young friend, it sounds as if you have the same fever that I have. Most will never understand it, but those of us who do know how it feels. Good luck Vamp.

Ron

Well said Ron. When anyone asks us about anything our project, there won't be a single thing we "Can't" tell them because we're doing it all ourselves.

We ran into a couple at a show down here that had a '41 Ford (already done) and when we started asking questions, they got real snooty and told us that they don't know much about it because they just bought it from someone in Texas and they had to go. Someone asks me or us, they'll be lucky to get away with a short 1 hour tour of the entire truck. Of course it'll be a couple more year before we can show it off anywhere other than in our shop.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 04:32 PM (EST)]Well Carlene's got me out of the closet. Everything I did on my 51 F3 I practically did all myself. I swapped more body pieces than I care to rememeber. I had very good help on the wiring harness and rewire. I contracted out cab mounts and floor welding. Other than that, I have paint and headliner to do yet. No major rechrome. Lucked out. I drive it around town. It is three colors green, with the ocassional red primer in reworked spots. I get some funny looks. I plan to paint soon. It is the classic "looks funny" but runs perfect! I don't want a perfect 10 show truck, just something to be proud of because I did most work myself. That is where the satisfaction lies. Anyone can go out and buy fully restored, it just takes money. There is an incredible amount of pride in work you do yourself.

I have taken 9 years to restore so far, but it has been registered and roadworthy in those nine years. My total outlay after the initial $1050 for the purchase is no more than $4500. So you can take your time. Save money on do it yourself. Get it roadworthy, and then worry about cosmetics. If you are smitten by the vehicle, your heart will rule, certainly not your logical sensibilities. Once again, good luck!:-)

Even though it is an old car, that is still a lot of money. Take the advice and as said above maybe 200 to 300 dollars. I bought a 64 Belair for 600 dollars with a not number matching engine. It needs some minor interior work and the rear body mounts rebuilt. The rest is some minor bodywork as far as some patching and sanding. What I am saying is that I got a car in drivable condition for that price. Remember stupid little stuff is expensive. Chrome and accessories can add up. It also takes a place to work on it and a lot of time. If you are like me and get it in your head you want it there will be no stopping you.

well, i'd say that if most of the parts are there and it runs well, then it's worth atleast $400-500 canadian... heck the 289 is worth 400 in the right places... if you want it and will enjoy the project, i say go for it

hey! i took a good look at the car. the body has minor rust on the rocker panels, the door *****, locks, mirrors, bumbers are all there. the rims and tires all are holding air and are fully inflated. the dash is all there, including the deck and little clock. all chrome is also present. all the intiror is seperate from the car but in tack. my friend who is selling it owns a body shop/used car dealer and he on a regular basis paints cars and trucks. he has a welder and all that and will help me out. he will also love to paint the car as he wanted the car for himself but never had time for it. i can maybe find a parts car with a good windsheil for 100 bucks. but the one i want is in great shape. 1 year work and it's done.

i have a few pics opf it. ill scan them when i get home
