My power steering reservoir/pump is leaking, I'm not sure where though, the leak is all along one straight line through the engine compartment which leads me to believe that it is the seal inside the pully. Is this my problem? Any insight is greatly appreciated!
You might try washing down the engine bay so that everything is clean, and then it will be easier to tell where the leak is coming from. It could be the pump, lines, or box. The lines are cheap to replace. The pump is pretty cheap to replace as well, you'll just need a puller for the pulley. The box is more involved.
I am having the same problem with mine. My leak coming from underneath and I think it is a seal. If you get a new pump make sure you get the right puller. I loaned one from O'reilly's and it won't work for some reason. I called a mechanic to see if they would do the repair for me and he said no because he it takes a "special puller" and he didn't have one. I don't know where to get this "special pulley puller" but O'reilly's did not hook up right to mine. Maybe somebody know's
It's the front shaft seal, mine did the same thing, do yourself a favor and replace it with the Saginaw pump, you will be amazed how much quieter and easier it steers.
I got a pulley puller from Autozone for about $25 and it works great. It's specifically for early-model Fords. It takes some force to get the pulley to inch off though, because it's interference fit. I had to use a cheater wrench.
My pump was leaking on the side hose (drivers side) … I was able to run a wire around the pump to hold the hose connection tighter into the housing. I seem to stop leaking and it still holding up after 5 years.
Go ahead and just try to find someone CHEAPer then me …..
It is on my junk yard list …if it makes you any feel better.
i just put the lucas power steering stuff in mine. it not only quieted it down, but stopped the leak completly...just mixed in with the ATF.. that stuff is thick as hell...
