1998 Power Steering Leak

I have a 98 expo with 189000 miles & I have a power steering fluid leak, I looked under the truck and is coming dripping from the middle of the truck, Also my power steering pump whines when I turn the wheel. Do I need a new power steering pump to stop the leak & the whining, or is there any thing else I need to look for.

If you can, top off the pump with fluid then have someone turn your wheel while you attempt to spot the leak. You may have to turn the wheel to lock to force the fluid out. The whining you are hearing is from the lack of fluid in the pump's reservoir.

x2 the whining is air introduced into the system from the leak, your going to have to see if it is the pump pully shaft seal, or the high presssue line which comes off the pump or return lines
Since the oil is in the middle i bet Its the high pressure line since it kinda bends towards the middle of the truck either the line or the fluid is running down it from the pump
Its a real hassle to get the high pressure line off due to the pully, easiest to borrow a puller-press kit from a auto parts store and remove pully

If its just the pump go motorcraft the other aftermarkets are a gamble, and it comes with a new teflon seal for the high pressure line, then try to spin pump pully by hand after filling to prime pump
Put truck in air and turn lock to lock like 40 times, engine off
Then engine on 40 times idling
lower and refill res should be about half gone after bleeding
mercon v
good luck

An easy way to think about it is a fluid leak is the same as an air leak, the fliud will be cavitating,or be foamy in the res, should look like a blending smoothy in the res
Dirty fluid or leaking system, clogged res screen causes this, as well as worn out pumps
