Oil Issues 95 F150

I posted this in another forum but didn't get much response.

I went wheeling last weekend and yesterday discovered a white buildup on the inside of my oil fill cap and at the very end of the dipstick. I did a full oil change with filter and 6 quarts of 10-40 and I didn't notice the oil I drained to be contaminated. I have also kept an eye on my coolant and it is still full.

But I'm still showing a quart low. Is 6 quarts capacity?

What are the main signs of headgasket failure?

Is there anything else to check to make sure I'm in the clear?

most are 6 qt. my 82 holds 7. head gasket usually shows contaminated oil, like you said, or you could have bubbles in the radiator when it is running. probably you just have a little condensation in there. keep an eye on it, and if changeing the oil did not help, you can have the radiator pressure tested. that would let you know if head gasket or not.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was curious if a headgasket would show up on a pressure test. That would probably be the best way to confirm right?

To really nail it down you need a compression test, but you might turn up other leaks in the cooling system with the pressure test.

compression test is good too, but if it is leaking at the gasket, not the cyl it will have good compression. a pressure test will show that the cooling system is holding/not holding pressure.

This may be normal especially on engines that are subjected to mostly cold starts and short trips and doesn't necessarily indicate a coolant leakage problem...It's a common symptom appearing about this time of year when the weather turns cool/cold.

I had a '91 300 F150 that did the same thing,never contaminated the oil,never had a problem with the coolant system,did that off and on for 4 yrs.My dipstick even rusted up.I think the cold starts and humidity may have something to do with it.When I went up to my other house,365mi.,it would clear right up.I think when it heats up real good for a long time,the moisture gets sucked out with cc fumes and burned via the pcv system.I never did find a way to totally eliminate the problem.Keep your dipstick oiled if you want to be able to read it later on.
