I think the failures are more related to the windings breaking down inside. The only thing
I have heard, regarding shimming, would be do to cam walk. You could get a little too close for comfort.

The sensor, if indeed it's a mag pickup, then the signal or square pulse generated will be a voltage determined by the closeness of the teeth to the sensor, the width of the pulse would be determined by the width of the teeth. The voltage should be of a constant level. The CPU knows the cam position of the cam by the width of the pulse. The failure is what is problematic for me. Normally a mag pickup rarlly fails. It can be disabled by metal filings accumulating on the face interrupting the magnetics, but that would be apparent when the pickup was removed. The only other thing that comes to mind is that the windings inside coming loose or crossed. i guess mostly I am just thinking out load and don't understand why the sensors fail in the way that they do. But then again, Ford & IH haven't figured it out ether.
