I was unable to rep also, thanks for the work, i am going to replace the same sensor this weekend and will post my results in this thread. I have messed with a couple of CPS's cause I had them around the fuel mileage is pretty significant between the gray blue and the old 1994-1996 black CPS. I had a drop in mileage from gray to black about 1mpg...I am interested to see if mileage comes back up.
I had someone ask me for the part number, and have stumbled across something interesting. According to our lovely search function the IH part number for our trucks is 1825899C93. When I read the box from DP I see this
More search reveals this looks to be the CPS for the OBS trucks. I can't argue with the improvements it made on my truck, but now this has me wondering.
For any others that have used the black IH model. Do you know which part number you used? Anyone know the difference between these parts? I'm going to shoot Jody an email and see what he has to say.
Anyone have the overly complicated decription of 'rotational velocity %', is the CPS trying to measure crankshaft position change due to each cyclinder?
The only reason I'll even consider taking mine in on the recall is to get the reimbursement for having purchased the grey one before the recall was formally issued. Even at that, it hasn't yet been worth the $27 to pursue it.

Borrowed from ITP's website:
For 99-03 7.3L, another way to use AutoEnginuity to see if there are problems with a particular cylinder is to monitor the "Cylinder x Change Rotational Vel" or "Percentage of Crank Deceleration" PID (also commonly called PERDEL). This PID exists for all 8 cylinders and is a representation of crankshaft velocity change (decrease) at the time the cylinder is firing. Ideally, these should all read 0%. Any cylinder consistently reading more than 3-5% change in rotational velocity is suspect and should be further examined. Note: Engine should be fully warmed up before checking PERDEL data.

I'm curious about changing mine out now. I had the recall done in March, but the PO left me a nice, new black one, in the bag, in my glovebox.
Decisions, decisions.....
I'd swap them out, then put your gray one in a ziplock bag to use as a spare. Don't forget a dab of anti-seize on the bolt when you put it back in.
I asked Jody about the new vs. old part number for the CPS, and his response was he tested both of them in his truck and could not tell a difference between the two.
I have read about some issues with the CPS in the OBS trucks requiring a shim sometimes, so I plan on measuring the old black compared to the gray to satisfy my own curiosity.
I'll go out on a limb here and guess that Jody knows more about the timing and performance of the 7.3 than I do so I plan on leaving the above part number black one in my truck.

I have the old part number black CPS in there now and the new IH one as my spare. Your statement from Jody leads me to believe it's not worth the trouble to put the new one in until old one gives me trouble.
I compared the length of the gray to the black when I changed mine out and saw no visible difference.
Awesome post Chris! I need to hook up my Superchip paperweight and see if I've got any stored codes, I have the grey CPS in, no apparent problems just like you said......but maybe the black will run better?

I didn't get any codes from my gray one. The issues only showed up looking at rotational velocity numbers or by running a cylinder contribution test. It seems everyone who has switched back so far think the black one does make the truck run better.
