could this possibly cause wear, or rather uneven wear in the engine- such that would show up as a higher than normal metals count in a oil analysis??

I don't think so Danny. I ran the gray one for about 45k in my truck and the OA's I had all came back good.

I got a blue one from Int. almost 2 years ago when to factory black one left me sit along the road, before the recall. I told them mine was black, the said, when they replace them they always put the blue one in! Runs great so far, no problems! Just wondering if anybody did a test with the blue CPS in there? I have a grey one as a spare, never installed it yet! I hope its ok to have the blue CPS in there!! Also in the past few months my #8 inj. is alot louder, much louder! Don't know why...........

essentially it means that the cyldinder is not "timed" correctly...many causes but the cps cause I believe is because the timing for the injector signal is different. Rumor from diane is that ford is creating a new flash to address the grey cps issue....they are all over it....

I second this assessment. I have a Ford black in there and I still have a clicky 8.

Agreed, I have a spare grey I spent $25 or something. Not worth the drive to the dealer.

I doubt any damage, but smoother is better for the engine.

I've had the gray CPS for about 45,000 miles and have had NO noticeable issues with my truck. According to AE, the rotational velocity has been high on cylinders #3 & #8, and they would fail the cylinder contribution test, but again, no noticeable issues from sitting in the drivers seat.

I ordered a black IH CPS from DP-Tuner and stuck it in, taking readings on AE before and after. Both numbers came with EOT above 170 deg.

Rotational Velocity %

Cylinder 1 Gray 0.2 Black 0.2
Cylinder 2 Gray 1.1 Black 1.3
Cylinder 3 Gray 1.9 Black 0.1
Cylinder 4 Gray 0.4 Black 0.6
Cylinder 5 Gray 0 Black 0
Cylinder 6 Gray 0 Black 0
Cylinder 7 Gray 0 Black 0
Cylinder 8 Gray 2.8 - 3.5 Black 0.4

The gray CPS failed #3 & #8 on the CCT. The black one passed all cylinders. I'll see if I notice any SOTP feel after I get a few miles on it.

This info may vary with different trucks, but I thought I would pass on my findings.
Reps given for the research.

I would agree with this. Roland also reported a 1 MPG increase (might be a bad time for some of you to tell with the switch to winter fuel), but if it does that too, that's an added bonus. I haven't been able to see if it helps my MPG's yet. Too many short trips with trailers mixed in with daily driving to get any good idea.

Actually, I posted a gain of ~.5 mpg with the black over the gray. Still a substantial improvement. Seems to be still holding to that.

More search reveals this looks to be the CPS for the OBS trucks. I can't argue with the improvements it made on my truck, but now this has me wondering.

For any others that have used the black IH model. Do you know which part number you used? Anyone know the difference between these parts? I'm going to shoot Jody an email and see what he has to say.

I went to my "local" International dealer and the 1825899C93 CPS has a new number and was about $25 bucks. I used the number from your pic of what you got from DP and they sold me that one for $51.20.

I swapped back to my old black CPS and the truck started quicker, consistently, but then, it was 60* out today (friggin' 60's in Dec. in Colorado!! nuts!!)

I plan to swap to this new black one I bought and see if I notice any difference.
