Steering Column

I have a tilt, non OD column in my 83 E150. I'm starting to have a lot of trouble with the ignition switch, the steering and transmission lock. Also, the tilt joint has gotten really sloppy.

Is there a chance that it might be something simple causing all of the above issues?

Otherwise, am I better off swapping out the column? If so, where is a good place to purchase a new or reman. column? How much work is involved in the swap?

Thanks in advance!

That could be loose bolts holding the tilt casting to the steering column.

Ok, so the problem with the steering column stems from a broken housing.

So, the column will have to be changed. I loosened the two bolts under the dash and unplugged all the electrical connections. The column is now held in only by the transmission linkage, and I can't figure out how to disconnect it. Force will not pop the rod loose from the lever as pictured in the last picture. Will the column come apart under the dash? Looks like two pieces are joined together.

The rod can be forced out of the lever but it takes a lot of pressure. Ford at one time had a special tool for the job. It wasn't strong enough and didn't have enough leverage to do the job. I have used 2 heavy screwdrivers or prybars working against each other successfully. Lube the grommet and pry. If all else fails cut the grommet on the upper side and get a new grommet to replace it. The new grommets are a bit softer and easy to install.
