tailgate support

looked at cable style tailgate support, am thinking I will try to use late model cables, with anchor posts mounted to bed and tailgate. I will post pictures as I progress with fabrication. Anybody else gone down this road with cables ? I'm thinking I'll rivet a bracket to the tailgate that will have anchor post attached.

I've got the custom s/s hinge style supports - they look great and stop any trouble with cables/chains flapping about. Only thing is I wouldn't want to put any load on them (eg sitting on down tailgate etc.

I haven't yet but I am planning on the same thing. I noticed NAPA has the cables of various lengths as well as the mounting hardware required. I also will be using latches inside the bed to keep the tail gate closed. I got the latches from MAC's for about or $12.00 each.

Kusto: I had those latches. They vibrated open going down the road and there is no adjustment. If they are not mounted perfectly there is no way to get the tailgate snug and not rattle.
I found some SS latches at Mcmaster Carr with 3/8" adjustment and a latch to prevent them from opening. A little more $$ but very nice. I put a small rubber bumper in and adjusted the latches so they would compress the rubber a little, no rattles!
I also got SS cable with a vinyl cover and the SS end clamps and made my cables. I made the catch for the latch to act as a cable end also. Works real well, I sit on the tailgate all of the time.

Looks good Don. Do you suppose that if I used rubber pads with the latches I have they would still work or should I save myself a ton of hastle and just find something that will work better?

I was also thinking of re-mounting the stock tab from the tail gate inside the gate then weld on a couple tabs to the bed side that a person could run a pin through to hold the tailgate shut.

here is the kit we got,

POLISHED STAINLESS COMBINED LATCH & CABLE KIT
Show Quality, Cable is stainless with a clear plastic coating and is 22” long With all hardware and installation tool, very nice , just push gate closed and it latches

Also we have the same kit that is glue on, installs with high power glue, no holes, same as above but uses glue (or weld before paint) Pretty trick, comes with epoxy, works like a charm

Usually you just click on the users name and select P.M. since yours doesn't work I think you have to have a few more posts logged.

Welcome to the site by the way.

Were those latches in the catalog? I looked at a lot of pages but did not find them yet. If you could give me the description and the page number I would like to see them. Thanks. Larry

Here is the link and picture for the ones I got from Macs. Part Number BAAA-88200-CC $12.95 each.

Tho, I don't really see how the could rattle open if the safety pin is installed and the gate is latched.

Tom,
Here's what I did with mine. I decided to go with 1" webbing instead of cables. I used some chrome harware from the local boat store. I didn't want bolts going through the tailgate so I welded some studs to the inside and then bolted the parts up.

The straps in the pics are my initial run at this, I will sew up some new ones with black thread this winter

Bobby

Straps or cables

I hope to make progress on this over the winter as I want to paint the box in spring. Currently waffling on method, but thanks to all input. I will post when I decide.

Later

Tom
