Tighten tailgate cable slackness?

Does anyone have any experience tightening the cables that hold the tailgate? My 2004 Ranger has a cable on one side that is supporting the tailgate. The other cable is a bit slack. I tried loosening the bolts holding everything together, but I was unable to move the bolts to affect the cable slack.

NAPA stores sell new cables. it might be easier just to buy a new one. I think the ends of the cables are crimped on so it would be hard to adjust the length of them.

Better buy them in pairs or you will still have slack in one of them.

Yup, just get two new ones and make sure they are the same length

Had the same problem on my 06. I just bought one new one at napa, it matched one of the two that were on the truck.
