Well...I'm basically startin' this thread so I can post some pictures in a couple weeks when I finally get my engine back from the machine shop. I'm just too excited and had to post early
Anyways, I have a question about the carb. I am currently running a Holley 650cfm, and I am thinking that it will be too small.
Specs:
'69 block (C9VE) bored .030 (466ci)
D0VE-A heads
Speed Pro forged pistons (L2404-F) 22cc dished I believe?
Edelbrock Performer 460 intake
CompCams Xtreme 4x4 cam (not sure on the PN yet...nothing major, but somewhere in the 520-550 lift area?)
The rest is stock or stock equivalent I believe.
Engine is going in my '78 Bronco and will be used for fourwheeling 95% of the time. Trails, and mud.
So will a 650cfm be big enough? I feel that I need to step up to a 750...
regular high RPMs in the mud you probably need the 750. Mostly regular wheeling and occasional high RPM, the 650 is probably fine. Run the 650 1st, you can always change it later.
if you get the X4262H it will be good to 5600 rpms. if you are going to actually use power up in that range, a 750 will be pretty much right on the money. X4256H would run out of steam around 5000 and would be better with a 650-670 carb.
The heads are stock D0VE-A's other than roller-tip rockers and haredned valve seats. I was doing this build on as tight of a budget as I could while still doing it right.
Engine won't see anything over 5,000RPM's. Those forged pistons are fricken heavy!
I do plan to use the Holly 650 to initially get it running and tuned. I just wanted to know if I needed to start saving up or looking for a bigger carb.
Ben: The carb is pretty much brand new. A good friend of mine already offered to trade me an entire front clip from a '79 for it (Hood, fenders, inner fenders/supports, grille, lights, trim....everything in absolute mint condition). A very rare find around here. His carb is about shot too.
But if that falls through, and I end up needing a bigger carb, I'll let ya know
I had a Holley 600 on my 466 at first, same deal out of money. I used it for a while then I got a Holley 750 vac. It runs better with the 750. I'd say a 650 would be ok all around. Maby get a center hung float bowl kit & a rear metering block kit for it if it seems to run ok for you. You might want to try a 1" 4 hole spacer to go with it.
Well, she's sitting in the Bronco and runs great aside from the anemic carb!
Not only anemic, that carb looks invisible. Congrats ATC.
Yeah, it's the new Holly Invisilite 650! LOL
I took those last weekend (Oct. 25). This past weekend (Nov. 1) we buttoned it up by installing the carb, dizzy, and filling it with coolant. I didn't get any pictures.
Suprisingly, I installed the dizzy within 4-5 degrees of perfection. She fired right up and purred for 20 minutes at 1800rpm. Took it for a spin down the road and had the biggest s***-eating grin on my face the whole time! Once I got back I threw the 38's on it while she cooled down and we played with getting the power steering bled. Now, I gotta find a 6" lift for it....
