I have a 81 1 ton I want to put onboard air on. I want to use an a/c compressor but would like to keep a/c. I was thinkin of riggin it in where smog pump is? Anyone know of a write up on this. Even a write up on convertin the a/c pump over would be helpful.

 

I really recommend you check out www.sabreforce.com They just came out with a bracket system that allows you to run an onboard compressor while allowing you to keep the existing A/C. I have seen their products up close and they are nothing but excellent.

I have seen this done with Jeeps and Chevys. AND even the older Ford AC compresors. You have seen em, they are long and take up a world of space under the hood. I think they are the old Sanden(sp?) compressors....I think is the word. I dont see why you cant do it but it would take some rigg'n and mod'n and the help of of a kit. BUT if you are like me, ITS ALL GOOD! Good luck and keep us abrest! (love that word!)

A friend of mine did an onboard air comp. using an old York A.C. comp. His setup worked great,a few things to keep in mind. The freon is what lubes the innards so you need some sort of lube , he used a small K&N breather element and oiled the bejesus out of it , this was used on the inlet side. He also hooked up a switch for the elec. clutch, you don't want this thing running full time.You will also need a press. switch, something from an air comp will do, Got himself an air tank and plumbed it all together. The nice thing about the York a.c. comp. is that they came as std. equip. on almost all late 70's Fords & Merc. cars with a.c. so when you get one get the mounting brackets to go with it.You will have to wire the clutch through the press. switch so you don't blow out the tank. Mount that puppy up and have air anywhere. Anyone else out there use this setup? Did I miss anything? Hope this helps.

You put compressor oil in with the system when you charge it up. The differance with the AC system and the compressor system is that the AC system is completely closed. The compressor system is not. You have the compressed air going into the tank that was in the compressor....duah! haha. I am reading on how to use the York compressor and is says that it has 2 cambers for the oil. Upper air chamber and the lower oil reservoir. The dual chamber setup keeps the lube oil from mixing with your air supply. They said to drian the oil from the from the upper air chamber from the compressor. then drain the oil from the reservoir via fill plug(s) on the side of the compressor. Then put eveything back together and refill the OIL RESERVOIR with 8 to 10 oz of 30-weight oil. I got this info from Petersen's 4Wheel and Off-Road, Jan 2001 ed, by Glenn Bontly. Hope that keeps me leagal! It gives a very detailed diagram of the setup and yes! They kept the AC in the Jeep they put it in! hoped i helped!

I had an old boy fix me up with on board air some years ago. (1993 F250) He's an old surf fisherman and does it for a hobby and some spair change. He makes up custom brackets, mounts an old A/C compressor and here's the clincher, he welds another pully onto the alternator pully and drives the compressor with it. It has an in cab switch to turn it on. He attached a fitting thru the grille and you simply snap on your hose and air up your tires!! slick as snot!

 

I did not want truck motor to run air. I bought a Honda 5.5 complete air compresser and mounted in bed of truck. It takes up a little space but it works great. I let the Honda do the work instead of 390c.i.

 

I have onboard air on my 460. I used a twin cylinder Chrysler
A/C pump. Works great.
