i have a 88 ford f350 4x4 with a 7.3, from what i understand the last
owner turned the pump up one hole turn. so i need to turn it back down.
so what i need to know is do you turn it in or out to lean it out ??
It must smoke very black if it was turned up that much!!!! It is likely mis- information, I'm not sure it is possible to turn it up a whole turn, assuming that it was in fact the fuel limiting screw under the triangle plate on the passanger side of the IP we are talking about. Normally 1 flat or 1/6 of a turn is plenty enough for more fuel and power. Diesels do not run rich or lean FWIW, only run faster or slower with more or less power for the amount of fuel delivered on each power stroke. If you need to turn it down you will be backing the screw out.
i dont know what to think of it, the smoke is gray. no matter what i do it will not smoke black. even if i lug it in a higher gear. any thoughts ??????????
i had it running and took the air cleaner off, i took a little diesel in a cup and put it
in the intake. it started running a little funny for a sec but i got black smoke.
could they have turned it down instead of up? or could the fuel pump be getting week ?
it runs goog and smooth for the most part , but at about 2000 rpm, it will studder
or miss , and has a lot of gray smoke. the fuel filter looks a little old, so that may be what it is. or the fuel pump may be a little week. thanks for the tip on not puting
fuel in the intake. i hope i didnt hurt it. anyways to me it sounds like lack of fuel feed
or air in the fuel system.
If you would have put enough fluid in the intake, there would be no mistake that it was hurt.
When the piston with enough fluid in the cylinder to take up all the room at the top of the stroke, the piston would have stopped instantly, just like it ran into the head.
That sudden stop is what breaks things.
Fluid in the cylinder causes the engine to hydrolock.
Change the fuel filter.
Get a pressure gauge, then remove the valve core in the fuel filter bleeder valve.
Attach the guage there with a hose.
With the engine idling you should have between 4 and 8 PSI fuel pressure.
Now turn the engine off, leave the hose on the filter.
Route the hose into a container and have someone crank the engine for 10 seconds.
You should have at least 1/3 pint in the container.
If either of the above are not up to spec, replace the lift pump.
well i changed the fuel filter, the truck runs 70 % better. the gray smoke is slowing down
the more it runs, but still no dark or black smoke when i rev it up. but the studder or
mis is gone, runs a lot smoother.also starts a lot better and faster.
err I mean, your pump is.
chances are the pump has worn over time and just needs to be advanced. you can do it, or you can have it professionally timed.
If I was you, I'd advance it a hair myself (run a search on it) if that fixes it up, either run it or have it timed.
