after i installed the 6.0 cooler i went to the ford dealer to get more merc 3 they said they now only have merc 5 and it says on the bottle semi synth, which the 3 did not, so it was changed. dealer told me they were on to mix, so i did. but im going back to reg anyways. at least my temp issue was resolved .. jeff
A leak in the in-radiator tranny cooler will make the fluid pink. If it's not a clear deep red, then something is wrong. You might also check for signs of ATF in your radiator-fluid.
You can bypass that in-radiator tranny-cooler and flush the fluid, and then see if the problem reappears.
i do believe i have a guage related problem. my guage went right to 130 on a cold start, so i suspect the guage is bad. I called Diesel manor where i got it from and he also said it sounded bad because it bounced around to 160 in 5 miles then went back to 140. So i suspect this is the problem. And when i left for work this am it must have been 130 then went to 190 so sounds to me like the tranny temp guage is wacky. i sure hope so. but BTS suggested changing out the merc 5 mixture i have to reg merc 3 for my tranny. so thats in the plan as well. thanks jeff
Well i took BTS advice and Im gonna go that route. I just bought penzoil atf to replace merc 3. I sorta have my own custom blend in there now 8 qts mec 5 and rest was dextron 3 so i will change it all out.

Check your ground wire to the gauge. If you can, reroute the ground wire to another source. Sure sounds like a grounding issue.
well im sure its the gauge now because when I went home from work the truck was stone cold, and as soon as I started the truck up it went to 130. then 3 miles down the road it jumped to 160, 5 miles later it bounced back to 130 and never moved again. I think its fried... they are sending me a new one free (warranty)and its sure is a lot eaiser fix than having a tranny problem....
Thanks for all the responses out there, this is a great place for info Jeff
