Tranny temp ?

Is it possible for a tranny to be to cool.
I had the tranny flushed last week.
It has always run on the cool side, about 150* ( my truck is 12,000lbs everyday )
But now it takes about 10 miles for it to get up to 150*
Then today I was towing my dump trailer ( about 6,000 lbs ) and they never got above 155*.
It was only about 50* out today.

That does seem strange to me. If you were going short distances and unloaded it would be different, but with that weight that you list, I would have thought you would have had more temp on there or had warmed up quicker.

The tranny should run around 195* like the engine, do you think maybe the gauge is faulty, Gigger

It is possible to "over-cool" the transmission. Optimum trans. temp. is between 180-195 degree's Fahrenheit.

The thermostat starts to open at 165*. A heated flush is bit warmer. So, at cooler outside temps, I can't see the tyranny even getting close to 190*.
The highest I saw this summer pulling the TT was 185*

I am checking it with both my Autometer gauge in the tranny ( port in the side ) and my Edge CS.
So from two points.

Sounds like ours are about the same.
I have seen mine get up to about 180* a few times but that was with a GCW of 23,000lbs and a hot & humid day.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Mine went to about 170* before, romping on it.

I usually see 150-160 myself

Same here Tex, mine stays 155ish unloaded, and I've seen 180 sumthin towing a couple times. Factory trans temp gauge reads normal ( in the center) a few hundred yards out of the driveway.

I did forget to factor in the ambient temp as well. Rusty and I pretty much have the same seasonal temps, but NWT is up there in Yankee territory, so that could very well influence what his truck "sees" with regard to TFT.

I just seems really really low to me though, but unless I was able there to see how it reacted with mine, it might very well be closer to normal for that area.

Andy, if you have one of those laser pointed temp reader, aim it at the pan or the case just for the heck of it, I'm sure with 2 ways to read temp what you're saying is right but we would like to know what the laser temp reader shows............curious G

Why would you put a second cooler in that truck? It already has a cooler in the radiator and a HUGE air to oil. Does the second cooler have 1/2" fittings and minimum 1/2" passages? If not you're adding restriction that will reduce cooling and hurt the transmission.

No, it should not. The transmission thermostat starts to open at 165°F, so the trans should run about 170°F fully warmed up.

The factory gauge reads in the middle once the transmission is warmer than 50°F.
