Bed floor progress

I stained bedwood this weekend; used thinned black paint and will rub-in boiled linseed oil to hopefully give me a weatherproof finish. Boards are blacker than picture would indicate.

Varnish

I've never found a varnish that did not require sanding and re-application every couple years, including marine spar varnish. I've used oil on furniture; thought it might stand up better.

I've had marine urethane varnish on my bed wood for over 25 years and have never touched it except to wax.

Marine Varnish

That is good result; does your truck see much wet weather. I don't want to have to mess with re-varnishing every 2-3 years.

My only experience with the spar varnish was on woodwork on boat, as well as lawn furniture.

If you are interested in the longevity of different bed wood finishes, you might want to check out our website. We have done 2 different finish tests in the last few years and have all this information available online. See the following links:
Wood Finish Testing - Testing of different wood finish products

We also have suggestions on how to finish bed wood:

Hope these help!

I used spar varnish with good results. But I don't use mine in the rain. This paint/oil method may be another route for those that want a "working finish". It seems like it would be a lot easier and less expensive. Please let us know on your progress after a few months of rain. Jag

Bed boards look good. I know what you mean about the varnish breaking down and needing attention. I used the best Spar varnish I could find on porch rockers that sit on a covered porch on my shop but the varnish cracks and peels off. Like others have said, it depends on where the truck will be stored. If it's in a garage and only driven on pretty days the varnish will last a long time.but if it is sitting outside (like mine is for now)then the spar will surely break down.
Later, Mike
