Has anyone swapped a computer from a new body style truck like a 2002 vdh5 computer into a 1996? I have got the truck running on it and had DI make me some files. It runs great. More power, a lot better throttle response. The main problem is the transmission wont shift. I can manually shift from 1st to 2nd but when I go to drive it just acts like its in neutral. Any info or tips are welcome! Wish it was a manual! LOL would be a lot easier!!!
the 99-03 pcm has different trans programming, it wont work. the 4r100 has an additional check ball in it that the e40d doesnt and the 4r100 has an additional sensor that the e4od doesnt.
I know the 4r100 has an additional sensor (turbine speed sensor) and a couple other differences. They are basically the same trans other than that. Im hoping to maybe fool it with tuning. Maybe!
I guess the question I have is why you want to run your OBS with a later PCM? A different PCM won't do anything a chip can't and you don't have to mess around with the stuff your dealing with.
Ive been doing some checking and the obs computer doesnt have the capabilities for higher horsepower tuning like the newer computers. Just the little bit that Ive run it it runs way better that my old computer ever did with a chip. I was running a 6pos. chip from DI before and just reprogrammed it with files for my new computer (vdh5) with single shot injectors. It runs way better. Better throttle response and definetly more power.
My other option if I cant get the trans to shift is go to a 6speed. Anyone got one they want to sell?
Well I would be lying if I thought that was really the case but none the less I would look at a pin out of PCM versus the wiring diagram of the Transmission. My guess is there is some pin swapping that needs to be done on the PCM connector.
Also isn't there a difference in the signal of the MAP sensor between the SD and OBS. I think the OBS is a HZ signal and the SD is a voltage signal.....
Im not sure on the map sensor. I had to make an adapter harness to switch the pins to match the new computer. I got a pin diagram of both computers and plugs and switched according to that. Thats a very long process. I checked for codes with my scan tool and the only ones I have are for the transmission turbine speed sensor and range sensor so im going to check my pins in the harness and switch them for the range sensor. I checked the data for all the engine sensors and they are all reading ok with my scan tool.
I was running a DI 6pos chip with their best files for the 96 computer and I also had the XSmoke setting!! IDM mod 10kmod with a switch, downpipe ,4" exhaust, custom cold air intake, 2002 hpop with crossover. Everything stayed the same when I switched the computer except for the tuning. The new pcm is a 2002 vdh5 and the tuning was done by DI last week. I have a aftercooler and 2000 intake manifolds to put on along with a bigger turbo and injectors this winter. I have a diesel performance business that I own so my projects get put on hold. Customers come first!! I have had several customers ask me about using a newer pcm like what I am doing so I decided to use my truck as aguinea pig and get it to work! If it does!!

Is it possible the new PCM is for a manual trans ?...
Thanks for the info. I will check the TRS. The computer Im pretty sure is for a auto. Its a vdh5 which should be for a auto. Ill change the map sensor too if I get it shifting right. The original computer was a NAW4 that was reprogrammed by ford to a 97 TDE1. Thanks again!
