Need help with my automatic

My 97 F250 has the 4 speed auto and it needs to be rebuilt. Should I just buy a whole new one online or rebuild this one? If buy a new one, where? I believe its an E4OD.
Plus the truck is 2wd. and I want to convert to 4x4 eventually. Will the transfer case bolt up to it, or will it need a tranny with one built into it?
Also the shifter is loose as hell, how do I go about fixing that?

Tim already answered most of your question in the original post.
The loose shifter could be the cause of your tranny acting up. IMO
A loose shifter means the TRS on the side of the tranny may be slightly
out of adjustment. In some cases you will burn up the trans.
